You:
hi! it's mara here⭐
Aaron :))
Hello :)
Nothing came out after that hello he sent that day after you texted. You zoom in on his profile picture while in school. The picture is a little blurry, and you notice that he has a sharp jawline. Shut up head! You quickly exit the picture, your face warm.
You're early to school today, the usually bustling corridors empty of life. Your classmate, someone you don't talk to much, sits at the corner of the last row. You exchange smiles and she continues with her work.
You fiddle with your phone, not sure what to do. Then you smell perfume. A familiar scent, one that leaves you with a phantom scent, even when the owner isn't present. Your Games Captain for the academic year.
Rosa Higgins.
She smiles at you, a pearly white smile, complete with dimples. Everybody loves her, and you don't hate her. She has the irresistible pull of a siren, making you revel in her attention.
"Mara, the blue jay!" She grins, her nickname that she gave you when you were captain of your house last year sticks, and you can't help but feel drunk with attention.
"Hey Rosa," you say before she leaves spotting her classmates.
"I hate that Rosa," Heidi settles beside you, pulling out her phone. She scrolls through WhatsApp, and a few other messaging platforms and then her attention is on you. "What happened yesterday?"
You look at her, the phantom scent of Rosa's perfume lingering in the air. It's sort of annoying, yes she's wonderful and all, but you hate how she makes you feel sort of like a zombie, an inferior sort of person. "What do you mean?"
"Aaron," she raises her eyebrows.
Your face colours. "I- He asked for my number," you stutter, not sure where this is going.
"Ah," her face is serious. "Be careful alright?"
"What's wrong?"
"It's nothing, just a few rumours..." She looks away. "Just be careful okay?"
You look at her, eyes furrowed in confusion. "What's going on Heidi?"
She still doesn't meet your eyes. "Do you- Do you have a crush on him?" She blurts, and this time her cheeks pinken.
You're at a loss for words. "What? No! Of course not, I just met him!"
Her face lightens up a little bit. "So don't freak out okay? I had a crush on him," she says nonchalantly as if she didn't just drop the biggest revelation in history. Heidi? The girl who says real-life boys suck, the girl who prefers fictional men, had a crush on Aaron? "I told him and he rejected me," she continues. "Turns out I was confused because my friends at the academy teased that I liked him. Just because I said we were similar."
You stare at her, dumbfounded.
"Anyway, he's a player Mara. He steals your heart and breaks it for fun. He's done that in his school too. My friends there told me about him."
You can't believe her. "He had a sister who was a prefect here though," you whisper, your head spinning. He's been fine so far, you can't imagine him that way.
"Not all siblings are the same, Mara."
