The rest of the week flies by without much incidence, and before you know it it's Wednesday evening already. You climb up the academy stairs with Heidi, with whom you share some school gossip.
"No way," she says, her eyes sparkling with humour.
"Yes way," you grin back at her as you open the door to the classroom.
The classroom is more silent than it has ever been before. You and Heidi head to your seats and settle down. Only then do you notice the stack of papers on the front desk. Was there another surprise test today? Only a week after the first?
The door swings open and surprisingly, it's Aaron, early for class for the first time. He passes the front desk and then backtracks to see what the papers are. Before he can take a proper look though, the tutor enters the classroom and gives him a look. He sheepishly takes his seat.
The tutor takes a slow look around the class and lands on Heidi. With a jolt, you realise he's disappointed. The stack of papers aren't new test papers, they are the papers that he's marked already. Oh dear god, you pray. Please don't let me have failed.
He carries the stack and begins calling out names, one by one. Students cautiously go up to him and collect their papers, either receiving a deathly disappointed stare, or a slight smile, to show that they did better than the rest, but not the best.
"Mara Cho," he calls out. You stand up and slowly make your way towards him. He hands you your paper and takes a good look at you. "You're new here, aren't you?"
"Y-yes," you mutter quickly. The tutor was scary up close, you thought he would explode, but he just 'hmm's.
Relieved you make it back to your seat and take a look at your marks. Forty-two per cent. Not a fail, but not a complete pass either.
You look over at Heidi, who just collected her paper. She doesn't seem like she wants to share what she has got.

It's break time and the tutor leaves the classroom. Heidi leaves with her group of academy friends too. You're left alone again.
Aaron makes his way to the front desk and eyes the stack of absentees' papers. Eyebrows raised, he loosens the first paper from the pile and looks straight at you.
"You got forty-two?" He asks loudly.
You burn red with embarrassment on your seat. You wish you could melt into the ground. "Yes..." you grit through your teeth. "I don't think you should be looking through that sheet."
He grins, replacing the sheet back where it was. "Don't worry, I only got three."
It's your turn to raise your brows. How is he so collected about it?
"I did better on the school test," you hear yourself saying, defending your marks. Although why you would do that, you don't know.
"Ah," he smiles, settling down on the chair in front of you. "So you did."
You look away, pretending to do something important on your phone. Urgh, why was your heart beating so fast?
_____
It's 9:15 pm and class just finished. As you leave the classroom with Heidi, you hear your name being called out. It's Aaron.
"So about that sorta-academy thing," he says. "Can I have your number, so I can contact you about it?"
You stare at him. Did you hear that right? "What?"
He turns over his phone, showing you the new contact screen. Oh.
Your face heats, and you don't know how to respond so you give him your phone instead. "Idon'tremembermynumbersocanyougivemeyours?" (I don't remember my number so can you give me yours?)
He's confused, but he understands as he takes your phone from you and types his digits in. With a smile, he hands your phone back and leaves the classroom. As you turn to leave, you notice your tutor smiling slightly. That makes you even more flustered. Urgh.
Heidi has already left, and you switch on your phone's screen to call your mother and see that it's open to Aaron's contact after he has saved it.
