Her words hit hard, heavier than I expected, though I wasn't entirely surprised. She had been distant since that unexpected, unfortunate encounter with Valeria. But what really rattled me was that it had been John who gave her those articles. I did not trust him; from the moment I saw that he used Cassandra's image without consent I knew he had other motives. It seemed like the invitation to his exhibition was a shady and desperate attempt to get her back. Giving her those articles was completely creepy though.

Despite everything, I needed to make sure she was okay, even if she didn't want me anymore. She was right. I had to go back to Spain soon, and I couldn't expect her to leave everything behind for me.

I pulled my phone from the desk drawer and searched for a name: Mario Sierra. He answered on the second ring.

"Alex. You only call when there's trouble," he said in Spanish, his voice mixed humour and a serious dig at me.

"That's not a very nice thing to say" I continued. Mario was a childhood friend. We went to primary school together and grew up in the same town. Now, he was one of the most respected lawyers in Spain, which made him invaluable during my divorce.

"Well, isn't it true?" He chuckled.

"I need the court settlement agreement from the divorce," I said, not wasting time. "The one with Valeria's allegations. Do you still have it?"

"I can get one of my assistants to get it. What happened now? Should I be worried?"

"Nothing like that. I just need it translated to English. Officially, so its veracity can be proven"

"Gracias." I ended the call and set the phone down, my thoughts drifting back to Cassandra.

Work demanded my attention, but for the first time in a long while, I found it hard to concentrate.
