The school courtyard was bathed in the warm glow of late afternoon sunlight, creating a relaxed atmosphere as students chatted and lounged around. Cleo, feeling particularly cheerful after a productive day, spotted Kai sitting alone at a table near the edge of the courtyard. His usual aloof demeanor seemed slightly softened by the golden light, and Cleo, ever the extrovert, felt an impulse to engage.
She approached Kai with a friendly smile. "Hey, Kai. Mind if I join you for a bit?"
Kai looked up from his book, a flicker of surprise in his eyes quickly replaced by his trademark coolness. "Sure, Cleo. Have a seat."
Cleo slid into the chair across from him, her eyes bright with curiosity. "So, how's it going? Settling in alright?"
Kai set his book aside, leaning slightly forward. "Yeah, I'm getting used to it. It's been a lot to adjust to, but I'm managing."
Cleo nodded enthusiastically. "I can imagine! New school, new people. It's a lot. I've been trying to get to know everyone better. How about you? What do you think of our little school so far?"
Kai's lips curved into a faint, reserved smile. "It's different. But I guess it has its charms."
Their conversation flowed easily, with Cleo's vibrant energy contrasting sharply with Kai's more subdued responses. They chatted about classes, teachers, and school events, with Cleo making Kai chuckle a few times with her light-hearted comments.
Just as Cleo was about to share a funny story from her last history class, Luna came into view, her face tightly set with unease. She had been observing Cleo and Kai from a distance and approached quickly, her movements almost frantic.
"Cleo!" Luna called out, grabbing Cleo's arm firmly. "I need you, let's go!"
Cleo, surprised but still engaged in her conversation with Kai, smiled at Luna. "Oh, Luna, just a sec. I'm talking with Kai right now."
Luna's anxiety was palpable. "Cleo, seriously, we need to go. Now."
Her frustration was evident, and Cleo's smile faltered as she looked at Luna. "Can't it wait just a moment? We're in the middle of something."
Luna's face flushed with urgency. "No, it can't! We need to go, Cleo!"
Suddenly, in a burst of frustration, Luna pushed Cleo's shoulder, causing her to stumble slightly. Cleo looked up, shocked and hurt, as Luna's eyes widened in realization. She immediately rushed to Cleo's side, helping her steady herself.
"Oh my God, Cleo, I'm so sorry!" Luna exclaimed, her voice trembling. "I didn't mean to—"
Cleo, still reeling from the unexpected shove, looked at Luna with concern. "Are you okay, Luna? What's going on?"
Luna's face was pale, her hands shaking slightly. "I... I'm just not feeling well. I think I'm getting a headache. Can you come with me to the medical room?"
Cleo nodded, still slightly dazed. "Of course. Let's go."
She turned to Kai, giving him a polite wave. "Sorry, Kai. I'll catch up with you later."
Kai's smile flickered briefly before disappearing as he watched Cleo and Luna walk away. His gaze shifted back to a distant point, his expression unreadable.
As Cleo and Luna turned the corner, Luna gave Kai one last fearful glance over her shoulder, her eyes conveying a mix of apprehension and regret.
Kai remained seated, his eyes following them until they disappeared from view. The courtyard seemed to close in on him, the earlier warmth replaced by a chilling sense of tension.
Max, who had been sipping his juice and observing from a distance, decided to approach Kai. His curiosity, mingled with a sense of unease, prompted him to make the move. He walked over with an awkward but friendly smile, trying to shake off the lingering discomfort from the previous interactions.
"Hey, uh, Kai, right?" Max said, trying to sound casual as he approached. "I'm Max. Mind if I join you for a moment?"
Kai looked up, his expression a neutral mask. "Sure," he said with a nod
Max stands front of him , the silence between them growing briefly filled by the silence of courtyard . He took a sip of his juice, trying to steady his nerves. "So, how's your first day going?"
"It's been fine," Kai replied, his tone even and calm. "Just getting used to everything."
Max tried to keep the conversation light, though he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something off about Kai. "Yeah, I remember my first day was a bit overwhelming too. Lots of new faces and stuff. Anything in particular that's stood out to you?"
Kai's gaze flickered briefly before returning to Max. "Not really. Just taking it one step at a time."
Max's unease grew as he continued to study Kai. There was something about Kai's demeanor—his calm, almost detached attitude—that didn't quite sit right with him. The rumors about Kai being from juvie and the recent tension between him and Luna only added to his discomfort.
"Well, if you need anything or just want to hang out, let me know," Max said as he was ready to leave the courtyard "It's a big school, and it can be a bit much at first."
Kai offered a small, almost imperceptible smile. "Thanks, I appreciate that."
Max gave a quick nod and walked away, casting a final glance over his shoulder at Kai. The sight of Kai's calm and collected posture, contrasted with the unsettling rumors, left Max with a lingering sense of unease.
