Sapphire, uniform coils curled their way around Chloe's face as she lay motionless on her king-sized canopy bed. Eyes watching the delicately carved roof enclosing her bed, she slowly traced the lines above, only finding sorrow hidden beneath where she once saw her future.
The night of her eleventh birthday, Chloe was so ecstatic that she could barely form a cohesive string of words. It had been a huge day for her, receiving gifts after gifts from family and the people of Cinderellasburg alike, feeling so loved and appreciated by all those around her. Something had shifted in her mind since her last outing to the town, this day was different. Not because it was her birthday, no, that wasn't it. Quite suddenly she had felt an unexpected feeling of responsibility over these people, looking from face to face, watching their brimming smiles and looks of hope.
So, staring up at the roof of her new canopy bed, little Chloe let out a deep breath of satisfaction. This was her purpose, to be a role model; to be a leader. Or, at least, to be the picture of perfect, just like her parents. That was all that she wanted in that moment. With a profound sense of pride in herself, the Charming princess began to relax her thoughts and let her mind wander, imagining her pre-planned future that lie ahead of her.
Chloe Charming saw herself in the engraved panelling above, imagining faces, images and stories into the artwork that decorated her stunning mahogany bed in her beautiful, grown-up room. Her life would be perfect. In the top left corner she saw herself speaking diligently amongst thousands of people. Somewhere else she saw her bright, blue hair floating in the wind as she travelled the seas. Then, most importantly of all, she found herself imagining her and her true love, front and centre.
A tall, smart and gorgeous man who Chloe would love, and he would love her back all the same. They would dance in the rain, laughing harmoniously as the graceful falling of droplets left them hearing only themselves. She could imagine his endearing smile and captivating eyes meeting hers in a crowd full of hundreds, yet she would know it was him, and
only him for her. She couldn't wait to find The One, but she knew if she was just patient and got a tiny bit older, that he would find her. Those dreams came crashing down as soon as she met Red. Well, she had felt uneasy about her suitability to her path for a long time, but with Red's deep brunette eyes finding hers in any room, she could no longer escape the crack in her fantasy.
Now back home in Cinderellasburg for Christmas Break, all the blushing girl could think about was that radiant smile. Those inviting lips that her eyes just kept trailing down to, much to Red's delight of course. But the pink dusting Chloe's cheeks contrasted with her heavy blue hair too intensely. The smile threatening to pull against her mouth just at the thought of her rebellious friend left the teenager filled with dread and a horrid, sick feeling in her stomach.
Why am I like this? The phrase that had been ringing in Chloe's ears ever since she had been forced to confront her sexuality. Before the girl could just ignore it, keep envisioning her future with the man of her dreams.
Soon she found he didn't exist, and he never would, not after she met Red. Well, not even before she met Red, but damn did she make things feel even more real for Chloe.
This wasn't who she was meant to be. Chloe Charming, in love with a girl? What would her parents think? God, what would Auradon think? She could see their sour faces bleeding into her vision. Looks of embarrassment and horror from the people around her as a worried, dull Chloe stood in the centre of her people, engulfed by their looks of shame and disappointment.
Tears began to fall steadily down her face, overwhelming her with the sudden, intense reminder of her reality. This time there was no handsome man to laugh with her as the droplets fell around them. Now there was only herself and the stinging, lone tears. And that's all there ever would be.
