I woke up to my alarm blaring in my ear, startling both me and my pets. Groaning, I reached over to the nightstand, grabbed my phone, and silenced the damn thing. I tossed it back onto the table and laid there for a second, trying to shake off the grogginess. My cat, Emerald, gracefully made her way over to me, hopping onto the bed and curling up next to me.

"Emerald, not right now," I whined, burying my face in her soft, orange fur. "I gotta take a shower. I promise I’ll walk you guys later, okay?"

She meowed softly, but I knew if I didn’t get up now, I’d never leave this bed. With a sigh, I dragged myself to the bathroom to get ready. I showered, did my usual morning routine, and went back to my room feeling a little more awake.

I pulled on a white long-sleeved crop top and some beige cargo pants. After brushing my hair, I let it air dry, throwing on a couple of accessories to complete the look. White Nikes? Check. I grabbed Daisy’s leash—my dog’s morning walk wasn’t gonna walk itself.

"Daisy!" I called out, heading down the stairs. "Come on, girl. We need to get out of here before I lose my mind thinking about yesterday."

She bounded down the stairs, tail wagging like crazy, with Emerald close behind. I clipped the leash onto Daisy’s collar, grabbed my sling bag, and stuffed my keys and wallet in it, just in case I needed to grab something to eat later.

We stepped outside, and the cool air hit my face as we started walking down the sidewalk toward the park. Just a few blocks away.

When we got there, I took a deep breath and let the peacefulness of the morning settle in. It was early, so the park was pretty empty. I sat down on a wooden bench, watching Daisy run off to play with a few other dogs. Her tail was going wild as she chased a ball someone had thrown. Emerald made herself comfortable on my lap, her purring calming me a little.

I absently stroked her fur, trying to ignore the lingering thoughts about last night. That argument had kept me up way too late, and I was still feeling the weight of it. But just as I started to lose myself in my thoughts, something—or someone—caught my attention.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a figure walking toward me. A familiar figure, actually. Squinting, I tried to make them out. Was that...?

I needed to clear my head. Last night had been a shitshow, and I couldn’t deal with it right now. So, I grabbed Shark’s leash and told my parents I’d be back later. They didn’t care; they knew when I needed some space.

The morning air felt good as I walked down the street with Shark trotting happily beside me. Turning the corner toward the park, I noticed something that made me stop for a second. Was that y/n? That red hair was hard to miss.

As I got closer, I saw her sitting on a bench, casually petting an expensive-looking cat. And of course, her boujee-ass dog was nearby, playing with some other dogs. I couldn’t help but smile as I approached. This was unexpected.

"Hey," I called out, giving a little wave as I walked up.

I looked up, squinting in the sunlight, and my heart skipped a beat. No freaking way.

"Billie?" I said, completely thrown off. "What the hell are you doing here?"

She laughed, pulling Shark closer to her. "I live on the same street as you, mamas. A couple houses down, actually."

My jaw dropped. "Wait, seriously? How did I not know this?"
