Chapter 4

The hum of the crystal filled the chamber, vibrating through the air, through their bones, through their minds. It was as if the entire room had come to life, the walls themselves breathing with some ancient force. Finn’s heart pounded, their head spinning from the voice they had just heard—the warning still ringing in their ears.

“The past has found you.”

Jade gripped Finn’s arm tighter, her eyes wide and frantic. “Finn, we need to go. Now.”

Finn swallowed hard, their gaze fixed on the glowing crystal. “But what is it? What does it want?”

Owen, still staring at the pedestal, shook his head in awe. “You’re not getting it, are you? This isn’t just some relic or tech left behind. It’s communicating with us. Maybe even trying to guide us.”

Jade shot him a look. “Guide us to what? We have no idea what we’re dealing with, Owen. This thing could be dangerous!”

“I know it’s dangerous,” Owen said, his voice full of excitement. “That’s what makes it so important. We’re on the verge of something massive—something no one has ever seen before.”

“Or something no one has survived,” Jade muttered under her breath.

Finn stepped closer to the crystal, mesmerized by its soft glow. The strange, distant voices continued to echo in the back of their mind—whispers they couldn’t quite make out. Every instinct told them to back away, to leave this place behind and never look back. But something else, something deep inside, urged them forward.

The moment their hand hovered over the crystal, the voices grew louder. The symbols on the walls began to shift again, rearranging into more cryptic messages. And then, another voice—clearer this time, and impossibly old—spoke directly into their mind.

“You are the key. The future depends on your choice.”

Finn froze, their fingers just inches from the crystal. The weight of those words settled heavily on their shoulders. The key? The future? What choice were they talking about?

Before Finn could pull back, Owen reached out, his fingers brushing against the glowing crystal. Immediately, the room erupted with light. The walls began to hum, the symbols glowing brighter and spinning faster, as if the entire chamber had been activated.

“Owen!” Finn shouted, trying to pull him back, but it was too late.

The crystal lifted itself off the pedestal, floating in mid-air, casting its brilliant glow over everything. And then, without warning, the chamber shifted.

The walls around them rippled, like water disturbed by a stone. The floor beneath their feet trembled, and suddenly, the air grew thick and heavy. The light from the crystal flickered, and for a brief moment, Finn thought they saw figures—shadowy, indistinct forms—moving within the light.

“What... what’s happening?” Jade’s voice was barely audible over the hum that now filled the room.

Finn’s mind raced, trying to make sense of it all. “I don’t know... I think... I think we’ve triggered something.”

Owen, his eyes wide with awe, barely seemed to hear them. “It’s a portal. I think it’s showing us the past. Or... or maybe the future.”

The figures within the light grew clearer, their forms flickering like ghosts. Alex could see them now—people, or at least, something like people, walking through a world that was both familiar and foreign. It was like looking through a window into another time, another place.

“What are we seeing?” Jade asked, her voice trembling with fear.

“I don’t know,” Finn said, their voice barely a whisper. “But I think... I think this is what the crystal was trying to show us.”

The scene before them was unlike anything they had ever imagined. The shadowy figures moved through a city, a vast, sprawling metropolis that seemed both ancient and futuristic at once. Towers stretched high into the sky, their surfaces gleaming with an otherworldly light. Strange machines hovered in the air, and the people—if they were people—moved with a grace and purpose that seemed beyond human.

But then, as they watched, the scene began to change.

The city—once vibrant and full of life—started to decay. The towers crumbled, the light faded, and the machines fell from the sky. The shadowy figures grew frantic, running through the streets as the world around them collapsed. In the distance, a dark cloud rose, swallowing everything in its path.

“Finn,” Jade whispered, her voice shaking. “We need to get out of here.”

But Finn couldn’t tear their eyes away from the scene unfolding before them. The dark cloud spread, consuming the city, and with it came a deep, guttural roar—a sound that reverberated through the chamber, shaking the walls and filling the air with a sense of impending doom.

The crystal pulsed again, brighter this time, and the voice from before returned, louder and more urgent.

“The choice is yours. Save the future or be consumed by the past.”

Finn stumbled back, their mind racing. Save the future? Be consumed by the past? What did it mean? What choice were they supposed to make?

Owen, still fixated on the crystal, spoke in a hushed tone. “This is it, isn’t it? This is why we found the device. We’re supposed to do something—stop whatever this is from happening.”

“But how?” Jade asked, her voice rising in panic. “We don’t even know what this is!”

Before anyone could answer, the light from the crystal flickered again, and the scene shifted one last time. Now, the shadowy figures were gone, and in their place stood a lone figure—a person, shrouded in darkness, standing at the center of the ruined city.

The figure turned, and for a brief moment, Finn thought they could see a face—a face they somehow recognized, though they didn’t know how.

Then, just as quickly as it had begun, the vision ended. The light from the crystal dimmed, and the room fell silent once more.

The three of them stood in stunned silence, the weight of what they had just witnessed settling over them like a heavy blanket.

“What... what do we do now?” Jade asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Finn stared at the now-dim crystal, their mind racing with a thousand questions. They didn’t know what the future held, or what the past had left behind. But one thing was clear: they were at the center of something far bigger than they had ever imagined.

And the choice—whatever it was—was now in their hands.
