Chapter 9: The City's Shadow
The early morning light filtered through the curtains of Finn’s bedroom, casting soft shadows on the walls. They had barely slept, the events of the previous night replaying over and over in their mind. The underground complex, the console, the mysterious building at the heart of the city—it was all connected. But what did it mean?
Finn turned over, staring at the glowing crystal on their bedside table. It seemed so small and unassuming, but it held the power to activate an entire hidden complex. There was no denying that whatever was going on, they were right in the middle of it now.
A soft knock on the door pulled Finn from their thoughts. “Come in,” they called.
The door creaked open, and Jade stepped inside, looking just as tired and frazzled as Finn felt. “Owen’s downstairs. He’s been pacing around like a caged animal.”
Finn sat up, rubbing their eyes. “I guess we’re all on edge.”
Jade nodded, leaning against the doorframe. “I still don’t like this, Finn. We’re messing with things we don’t understand. What if we’ve already done something irreversible?”
Finn didn’t have a reassuring answer. Instead, they pulled on their jacket and grabbed the crystal, slipping it into their pocket. “We won’t know until we figure out what’s going on at that building.”
Jade sighed but didn’t argue. “Fine. But we need to be careful. This isn’t a game anymore.”

Downstairs, Owen was pacing in the kitchen, as Jade had said, his eyes filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety. When he saw Finn, he stopped, a grin forming on his face. “Finally! You’re up. I’ve been thinking about last night, and I’m pretty sure we’re on the verge of uncovering something massive.”
Finn poured themselves a glass of water, still trying to shake off the lingering exhaustion. “Yeah, but we have no idea what we’re dealing with.”
Owen’s grin faltered slightly, but his enthusiasm didn’t wane. “Look, I know it’s risky, but this is bigger than us. Whatever’s happening in that building, it’s tied to the future we saw in the hologram. We can’t just walk away now.”
Jade crossed her arms, giving Owen a stern look. “No one’s suggesting we walk away. But we need a plan. We can’t just go barging into the city’s most mysterious building without knowing what we’re up against.”
Owen threw up his hands. “Okay, fine. A plan. But where do we even start?”
Finn set down their glass and pulled out the journal. “We need more information about the building. The map showed us where it is, but we don’t know what it is. We’ll have to dig deeper.”
Owen groaned. “More research? Ugh. This is starting to feel like school.”
Jade smirked. “Welcome to the world of actually solving problems.”
Finn opened the journal, flipping to the section that had shown the map of the city. There, sketched in faded ink, was the symbol of the building they were after. The handwriting was difficult to make out, but Alex could see fragments of words—“control,” “future,” “power.”
“This building wasn’t just any ordinary structure,” Alex said, tracing the words with their finger. “It was built for something specific. Something powerful.”
Jade peered over Finn’s shoulder, squinting at the writing. “But what kind of power are we talking about? Energy? Technology?”
“I’m not sure,” Finn admitted. “But whatever it is, it’s tied to the future we saw in the hologram. If we can find the source of that power, maybe we can stop the dark future from happening.”
Owen looked thoughtful for a moment. “So… we’re looking for a power source? Something that controls the future?”
Jade raised an eyebrow. “Or maybe something that controls time itself.”
Finn’s heart skipped a beat. The thought of controlling time was both thrilling and terrifying. “If that’s true, then we need to be extra careful. If someone—or something—has the ability to manipulate time, they could change everything.”
Owen’s excitement grew once again. “Then we have to get there first. If we can find this power, we can stop whatever’s coming.”
Jade still looked uneasy, but she nodded. “Agreed. But we need to be smart about this. No rushing in without a plan.”
Finn closed the journal and stood up. “Let’s go back to the library. We’ll look for anything that can tell us more about this building—who built it, why it was hidden, and what it’s capable of.”
Owen grabbed his jacket, ready to go. “Back to the library, then. Let’s solve this mystery.”
---
The library was quiet when they arrived, just as it had been the day before. They made their way to the back table, where old maps and books still lay scattered from their previous visit.
Finn wasted no time diving into the research, flipping through history books and old city plans, searching for any mention of the mysterious building. Leo and Jade joined in, though Leo’s patience was clearly wearing thin.
Hours passed, the quiet hum of the library broken only by the rustling of pages. It wasn’t until late afternoon that Jade finally let out a frustrated sigh, slamming her book shut.
“This is hopeless. There’s nothing here about the building. It’s like it never existed.”
Finn frowned, flipping through another dusty old book. “There has to be something. It’s part of the city’s history.”
Owen leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples. “What if it’s not in the city’s history? What if it was erased? Buried?”
Jade tilted her head, considering the idea. “It would explain why we can’t find any records of it. Whoever built it didn’t want anyone to know.”
Finn stared down at the map on the table, the outline of the building still visible. “If that’s true, then we need to be even more careful. We’re dealing with something that was hidden on purpose.”
Just as they were about to give up, Owen's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, squinting at the screen. “Guys… you’re not going to believe this.”
Finn and Jade looked over at him, confused. “What is it?”
Owen held up his phone, showing them a news article that had just been published. The headline sent a chill down Alex’s spine:
“Mysterious Power Surge in City Center: Authorities Baffled”
Jade’s eyes widened. “A power surge? In the city center?”
Finn’s mind raced. The building. It had to be connected.
Owen nodded, his face pale. “It gets weirder. The surge was detected at the exact location of the building from the hologram.”
Jade cursed under her breath. “Someone’s already there.”
Finn felt their heart pounding. Whoever had activated the surge was one step ahead of them. And whatever they were after, it wasn’t going to wait.
“We need to go now,” Finn said, standing up. “If someone’s already at the building, we’re running out of time.”
Owen jumped to his feet, grabbing his bag. “Let’s go.”
Jade followed, though the fear in her eyes hadn’t faded. “I have a bad feeling about this.”
As they left the library and headed for the city center, Finn couldn’t shake the growing sense of urgency. The surge, the building, the future—they were all intertwined. And the closer they got, the more they realized that their fight wasn’t just for themselves.
It was for the entire world.
