"Eight dead." The chief announces angrily to the room, "Eight goddamn deaths."
"I know, chief, but they-"
He cuts the officer off, "Don't give me that they're smarter than us bullshit." He shakes his head, "We've taken down perps bigger than this group of.. of.." he sighs, closing his eyes as he takes a second to compose himself.
You couldn't help but sink down in your chair, your guilt getting the best of you.
"I need all officers called in. Two at each residence until these assholes are in the ground."
The chief's words sent chills down your spine. Your mind beginning to spin out, Am I one of the assholes? Am I a perp, too? Of course I am, fuck. I'm going to die with this case. There's no way out, no way out.
You close your eyes, the thought of just turning Jake and his gang in makes you want to puke.
"You wanna take one of the houses together?" Cody asks and you take a deep breath through your nose as you nod, "Sure."
"You okay? You don't seem as chipper this morning." Cody tilts his head, "Did you sleep?"
You shake your head, "No. I've been up constantly trying to figure out how to get a jump on these Killionaires."
He nods, "I understand, but at the same time, y/n. You won't be able to help anyone if you're burnt out."
"I know." You look down, "I just don't want anymore fathers and sons and uncles losing their lives. This is just.. getting ridiculous anymore."
"I've just been informed that we will be getting more agents from the FBI, each team will be getting one agent to help them out. We will be rotating shifts, so once we get the schedule out, the ones who aren't on the first watch, get some rest. You're going to need it."
"If we aren't on first wave, you can come back to my place so you know you'll get up." Cody smirks and you roll your eyes, "That was one time." You laugh, "Let it go."
He chuckles and shakes his head, "Fine, fine."
You were in fact not on the first watch. You were on the night watch.
You left as soon as you found out, driving back to your place and you just hoped Jake wasn't there. You got out, scanning the area as you walked up to your door.
A package, placed neatly on your door mat, catches your attention.
You bend down, picking it up to inspect it.
No return address, just your name written on the front which is covered by twine tied into a bow.
You unlocked your door and walk in, closing the door behind you. You walk over to your counter, setting down your keys and you just stare at the package.
"See you found my gift."
You jump, spinning around, "What the fuck."
Jake smirks and walks over, "Whatcha got for me today, baby?"
You roll your eyes, "We're all being placed on houses. I got night shift."
"Everyone gets a babysitter, how cute." Jake chuckles as he leans down on the counter next to you. He motions to the box, "Go on. See what I got you."
"I'm not going to be knocked out when I opened this, taken to a whole different city again, am I?" You look over at Jake and he shakes his head, "No, nothing like that. Actually.." he stands up, drumming his hands gently on the counter, "I think you might actually kiss me when you see what it is."
