There were three of them. Three bottles of different sizes. They were all labeled 'change'. "It's probably a joke you know?" I looked at my best friend. Her face was currently scrunched up with skepticism.
"What if it isn't though?"
"Doubtful. I mean, if everyone could get their hands on this stuff wouldn't everyone's life be you know, better?"
I frowned as I looked back at the bottles on my desk. "True but that shop was ancient and kind of out of the way." I kicked at the paper bag on the floor. Old Treasure was printed on the bag. "That old guy seemed legitimate."
"Well, try one. The smallest one first though. Just in case it's poisoned or something."
"Why did you have to say that? Now I'm freaked out."
"You paid ten bucks for 'magic' in a bottle, I mean really?" I gave her a look that said I didn't appreciate her comment.
"If I die, you can have my stuff." I picked up the smallest bottle holding it to my lips. "Down the hatch." I knocked the liquid quickly as I could. It left a bitter taste in my mouth. "Well?"
"No sparkles or smoke." My friend said as she watched me carefully. "Feel any different?" Just as I was about to shake my head I felt a tingle. It started at the top of my head and quickly spread to my body. "Holy shit!"
" What?" Frantically I ran to my full mirror. My reflection left me speechless. I was flawless. My hair turned from brown crazy curls to a shiny waterfall of silk. My skin no longer had freckles but became a smooth creamy complexion. My body no longer held baby fat but smooth curves of a model. I almost looked like a different person.
"That was so cool! You totally look like a model!" I nodded number as I walked back to my bed to sit. If that was what a small bottle did, what would the others do? "If that is what a small bottle does maybe I should have picked me up one."
"Pass me the other bottles." She dutifully gave me the other two and I knocked them back. The largest one was a little hard to swallow. This time the feeling of needles pressed into my skin. It hurt enough for me to crawl into the fetal position.
"Are you okay?" My friend gapped in horror as I began to scream. Voices in my head began to chant soul soul soul! What have I done? Well you just sold me your soul to become the luckiest and most powerful person, madam president. So hang tight. We have a lot of work to do. A rumbling worked it's way through me making my former best friend to run for her life. Maybe I shouldn't have been so greedy and at least thought about taking the magic.
