"A conference?"
His boss clears his throat, pursing his lips upwards and thinking out loud. "Well, more of a mission I would say. The government is sending the best of the best. We want you in."
Taehyun breathes in and settles in his chair. He thinks about the proposition in all its fine details. Sure, he assumed the research was important and would hardly go unnoticed as they were treating one of the most lethal diseases.
But flying him and his team worldwide to talk about it in front of the press seems a little too big for him. He runs his hand through his tangled hair and squints his eyes. "Can't we give out statements here?" he asks.
Mr. Bang shakes his head. "It is not just a statement, Taehyun-Shii. You are important, people want to meet with you. What we did, here in the lab... "he pauses. "It's revolutionary."
"No, I know." Taehyun scratches his head. "Yeah, of course I know that," he repeats.
"Now that we have clear evidence on the surface that the medication is working, other countries want in." his boss explains. "It is just like business, Taehyun. And what is smarter than sending our team to sort of- well- "sell" our product." he air-quotes.
Taehyun's forehead creases. "How so?" he asks while slowly gaining interest.
"Talk about the research process, about the impressive results we've gotten on our patients. You of all people know front and back how much time and effort we've put in to make sure the medication works perfectly. You of all people can convince the embassies to put the medicine under circulation worldwide."
"Right." he spent precious years on this research and gave up the normal teenager experience for that cause exactly. Mr. Bang is not wrong when he says that Taehyun of all people knows the amount of effort they have put into this.
He is the amount of effort. He represents the things the lab had lost and the things the lab had achieved. He is the research. It started with him.
Taehyun leaves the meeting room feeling weirdly accomplished and giddy. A few steps into the hallway he sees Soobin waiting for him beside the reception table drinking coffee from a paper cup and making light conversation on the phone. He turns his head around at the soft steps and says something into the phone before he pockets it. "So?" he asks.
"So what?" Taehyun asks.
"Did you say yes? Are you coming with us?"
Taehyun huffs. "Of course, I am." he takes off his blue latex gloves he had no time to discard before the meeting. "Did you think I was not?" he dumps them into the white bin near the wall.
"I can never know with you." Soobin shrugs. "You took a while in there." he says as he leans on the water cooler.
"I wanted to know all the details before I agreed," Taehyun explained the reason for the delay. He is a cautious person, and Soobin knows this. This is why he doesn't question Taehyun further despite having agreed to be a part of the delegation without missing a beat during his talk with Mr. Bang.
He didn't need to know the details to immediately say yes.
The two begin walking towards the lab's exit. The place is different than the previous lab. Smaller, but more advanced. The shiny glass doors open automatically at the recognition of their faces.
