Becca Romanoff was emptying an old trunk in the attic when she stumbled upon an old diary. Ever the curious girl, she skimmed it to see every date was from the year she was born and she began reading.
An hour later she was mailing three letters that contained invitations to her wedding. Becca sighed in excitement at the possibility of meeting her father.
The next week, she dodged her mother and grabbed her Aunt Yelena, yanking her outside of the house.
"Becca, I was eating," Yelena complained.
All of her time growing up, Yelena was the fun aunt. She was the person who never held back and told Becca everything. While they acted more like friends, Yelena knew her place as a family member and put her foot down on occasion.
"Do you know who my father is," Becca asked while holding up the diary.
Yelena looked confused as she answered, "No. Is that Nat's?"
Becca nodded and said, "I found mom's diary in the attic form the year she was pregnant with me. Three men could be my father."
"What?!"
Becca opened the diary and pointed out the names as she skimmed the entries, "Steve, Bruce and Bucky. She met them all around the same time."
"She never told me that," Yelena exclaimed. "I'm going to give her a piece of my mind!"
"No, Aunt Yelena, then she'll know and I'll have to tell her that I invited all three of them to my wedding."
"You did what," Yelena asked in shock.
The girl's voice became emotional as she explained, "My entire life, I've always felt like there was a part of me that was missing, and I want to get married knowing who my father is."
Yelena sighed in defeat and asked, "How did you get their addresses? Or their real names if the ones in the diary are fake?"
"Research," Becca shrugged. "I have access to everything mom and grandma have, so it was easy to find their identities and do a background check. They were all military men, so it was easy."
"Alright, tell me who's who," Yelena complied.
"Steve was just out of the military and met mom in New York. They were together for a few weeks until she found out that he was in love with another girl. Then a week later she met Bruce while she was in Ohio for work. They were together until he had to leave to go back to his base, but their age difference also played a role since he was 10 years older."
Yelena looked at the pages and said, "I don't know a Steve or Bruce, but there are old tear stains on both breakup pages."
Becca felt a pang of sorrow for her mother then continued, "She met Bucky when she went to D.C. for a mission. He had had just gotten off the front lines and had PTSD, He called it off because he realized he made a mistake and needed to take care of himself."
"Hmm," Yelena said as she looked at the pages. "I don't know about a man named Bucky either."
"The last thing mom wrote was when she realized she was pregnant. After that the pages are blank."
"The only time I asked her about your dad, Nat told me some guy knocked her up, he didn't know you existed, and I left it at that. You sure about this?"
"Yeah... Besides, they already said yes to the invites yesterday."
"Becca," Yelena scolded. "Who do they think sent it?"
"Mom."
"Did you tell Rick?"
"No. I was afraid he'd try and stop me."
Her fiancée, Rick Jones, was the more levelheaded of the two of them and always thought things out. Unlike Becca, he was in college where he's working towards his bachelor's degree in computer programing. They had known each other since they were kids, dated in high school and he proposed on her 20th birthday, six months ago.
Yelena made a face as if to say "okay", then said, "Not gonna lie, I kind of want to see how this goes and which man dad will beat up."
Becca chuckled and glanced at the house window to see her mother was washing the dishes.
She and her mother had lived in Russia since she was three, and for as long as she could remember it had always been her and her mom with Aunt Yelena and her grandparents. They lived comfortably, thanks to the S.H.I.E.L.D. base in Russia. She loved her mom and their bond was unbreakable.
But growing up without a father had been difficult. Whenever she asked her mother about who her dad was, Natasha aways told Becca that they broke up before she realized that she was pregnant.
Everyone always told Becca she looked exactly like her mother. Her love for science came from spending time with her grandma, who was a scientist. Becca had excellent sparring skills because her entire family taught her at a young age and her leadership abilities came from her mother, who led the Russian S.H.I.E.L.D. base.
Becca was smart enough to go to college but refused because she wanted to work for her mom after graduating high school. Natasha was fine with it but made Becca work at the computers until she was ready to take on field work.
There was a side of her that longed for answers about who she truly was. She felt like a puzzle with a missing piece and she had a feeling that her father had it. Whoever he was, she would finally feel complete when she met him. More than anything, she wanted to know who her father was.
Now, three possible fathers were on the way to her wedding.
