As soon as we got home, Raina changed the bedding on our bed for us. Barney meanwhile was making phone calls. By five o'clock we had a houseful. I was sitting on Bret's lap. He was holding me tightly, and we were, um, talking. I had my eyes closed. I heard Josh's voice.
"Are you two ever going to come up for air?" We stopped kissing long enough for Bret to give him a dirty look. Raina laughed.
She announced, "Dinner is ready."
As we started eating, Ruby asked, "Elise, are you planning to share our son with us in the next few days?"
"I have him here for two weeks, and I intend to keep him.""So you won't share him with us at all?"
"I'm really not looking forward to having to let go of him again for another two months. I'm not sure how I'll survive it."
Bret said, "Babe, before you get upset, there are some things you need to know. The training facility is not quite two hours from here."
"So I could visit you?"
"Not quite. The training schedule will have us off on Saturdays and Sundays..." I interrupted him.
"So you'd come home to me?"
"Babe, you're beautiful. I want to take you with me. Now please, let me finish."
I zipped my lip. He kissed me.
"As I was trying to say, there is housing for married couples on the base. My wife and I will be able to visit on weekends. Or, you all can go visit us.
I sobbed hard. I didn't want to. Gentle crying would have been fine, but my pregnancy hormones had other ideas.
Back in the living room, I returned to Bret's lap.
Ruby said, "Bret, Elise has an ultrasound on Monday. I assume you will be taking her?"
"Of course. You don't think my wife will let me get that far from her again, do you? Besides, I want to see our son."
When we went to bed, we snuggled as best we could. Laying there, I felt like I'd swallowed a beach ball.
"Bret, I'm sorry we can't snuggle like we used to."
"We're together. That's all that matters."
"I'm turning into a cow. It wouldn't surprise me if I started mooing."
"Elise, you are still the hottest, sexiest, most beautiful woman in this whole state. I would never trade you for anyone, or anything. Like it or not, you're stuck with me."
We spent the rest of the night talking, kissing, and enjoying each other. Have I ever mentioned how much Bret loves me?
