Introductions

The most dangerous adversary to any situation is not knowing what the problem is.

This short document is to inform the public about the dangers of animals and people infected by Chronic Breakdown Disease. At the end of the document, you will know how to spot an infected, prepare for an infected, and most importantly, stay safe against the infected.

Disease

The disease was once known as Chronic Wasting Disease, a prion ailment that affected deer and elk, mutated to become Chronic Breakdown Disease. How the disease mutated is still unknown to modern science, but is theorized that the disease mutated overtime to infect humans and other animals through prolonged contact i.e, consumption of infected meat. The disease is transmitted through either consumption of infected material or bodily fluids of infected individuals and animals. Besides direct means, CBD can be transmitted indirectly through infected water supplies and soil.

The disease has a 100% fatality rate: anyone or anything with CBD within their system. CBD takes approximately 28 hours to run its course, compared to CWD (Chronic Waste Disease) and Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE/ Mad Cow Disease) months to even years of taking effect on an infected host. During these 28 hours, people infected by CBD would begin to rapidly degenerate in physical and mental health as the prion would begin to take away all nutrition within the host until they go into a 'dormant' stage. This dormant stage lasts for the last few hours before the infected individual 'awakens.'

Warning Signs

Once the individual awakens, they would have changed. To know if they are infected with CBD, they would follow this criteria.

Inability to speak coherently and could only emit groaning and growling sounds.

Mole like growths on the infected.

Constantly drooling.

Loss of certain motor functions.

Hyper aggressive behavior towards anything not infected with CBD.

Emaciated figure (likely due to hours of nutrition being sapped.).

Lack of a reaction/fear in things to which may kill the infected.

CBD victims once awaken will go out and hunt for sustenance from any source; whether it be bugs or other people, CBD victims will kill and eat any and all living things in its vicinity, This seems to affect even primarily herbivorous animals as well from studies.

Dangers of a CBD victim

CBD victims unlike normal people who can use 60% of their muscles due to how the body tries to conserve energy, an infected individual will use 100% of their strength to try and kill its prey item. This is an issue as even though they lack the motor function to properly attack someone, CBD victims have enough brain activity to grab and bite into its prey item. Excluding the physical danger a person infected with CBD presents, the infected can spread the disease through their saliva and in turn spread the disease further if the person does somehow get bit. There is no known cure to CBD. The only measure to CBD is if a bite mark is located onto a limb, immediate amputation is the only means of ensuring the victim doesn't also become infected with the disease.

(Note: The window of opportunity to amputation is very small. First responders note that after 30 minutes of no amputation, the bite mark victim should be considered lost.

Species affected by CBD

Hominids.

Canine.

Ursidae. (Bears.).

Felines.

Cervidae. (Deer, Reindeer, Elk, and Moose respectively.).

Bovine. (Cows and Bison.).

Steps to Take

Although there is very little besides amputation of an infected limb, there are many active measures when facing infected individuals. Infected individuals senses have been kept normal from turning, meaning as long as the creature doesn't view, see, hear, smell or taste you, then you are in the clear. Another way of protecting your life is the fact that due to the high metabolic nature of the disease, infected are unable to run, use this as a means to escape. Fighting one or many should be used a last resort due to the physical difference between a normal person and infected, but if forced to, follow these steps:

Keep your distance. For the average person infected with CBD, their effective reach is around 71 inches (this reach could be greater or lesser depending on the infected person or species.).

Aim for the head. Reports and studies show that a headshot is the most surefire way of killing the infected. Center of mass shots even though they can cause damage, won't be able to kill them. If you are unable to get a headshot in, disabling an infected through arm and leg shots is another way of dealing with them. Your goal isn't to kill as many infected as possible but rather to escape from the infected individual.

If given the time, dispose of CBD infected corpses. Although the present danger is gone, CBD can still be a threat through infecting the soil and nearby groundwater supplies. Disposal should be headed by a professional, but if no one is available, produce a controlled burn around the area with the corpses around.
