The sunlight streaming through the window signaled the start of a new day, but I couldn’t shake off the thoughts from last night. Yn had finally told me about Jiho, and while I assured her I wasn’t upset, the fact that her past had returned to haunt us weighed heavily on my mind.

After years of teaching biology, I had perfected the art of remaining calm, no matter the situation. Today would be no different. But it was getting harder to focus, especially knowing Jiho was now a part of our lives — both mine as a professor and hers as a painful memory.

Focus on the lesson, Taehyung,I reminded myself as I prepared my notes for the day's lecture on cellular reproduction.

I entered the biology lab, the familiar smell of chemicals and fresh specimens filling the air. My students were already seated, waiting for the lesson to begin. Yn was among them, sitting in her usual spot at the front, eyes focused on me. I gave her a brief nod, trying to keep things professional, though the tension between us was unmistakable after the conversation last night.

Just a few seats behind her sat Jiho. I could feel his gaze before I even saw him. It felt invasive — as though he was trying to insert himself back into a place where he no longer belonged.

Clearing my throat, I began the lecture. “Today, we’ll be diving deeper into cellular reproduction, particularly focusing on meiosis and the way it ensures genetic diversity.”

I launched into the details, explaining the processes of mitosis and meiosis. But even as I spoke, I could feel Jiho's presence — his watchful eyes flicking between me and Yn. It was unnerving, but I kept my tone neutral, not letting any emotion show.

After explaining the first part of meiosis, I asked the class a question, trying to draw them into the discussion. “Who can tell me why genetic variation is essential in evolution and natural selection?”

Several hands shot up. I nodded towards Harein, who gave a solid answer. As I moved on to another question, I noticed Jiho's hand rise slowly.

I hesitated for a moment before nodding to him. “Jiho, go ahead.”

He cleared his throat, looking calm, though his words carried a hidden weight. “Genetic variation is important because it ensures that a species can adapt to changing environments. Without it, populations would stagnate, stuck in the same cycles, unable to evolve.”

He glanced briefly at Yn before continuing, “Just like how people can get stuck in their past if they’re not careful — repeating the same mistakes, unable to grow.”

His words hung in the air, loaded with implications. The classroom grew silent, and I clenched my jaw slightly, keeping my expression neutral. The tension was palpable.

“That’s an interesting perspective, Jiho,” I replied, my voice steady. “But it’s also important to remember that growth comes from moving forward — not dwelling on past cycles.”

I could feel my heartbeat quicken as our eyes locked. The challenge in his gaze was unmistakable, but I wasn’t going to let him win. He might have been part of Yn’s past, but I was her present. And I would fight to be her future.

Sitting in Taehyung’s class felt different today. The atmosphere was heavy, and I could sense the unspoken tension between him and Jiho. When Jiho made that comment about people being stuck in their past, I could feel my heart race. He wasn’t just talking about biology — he was talking about us.

I glanced at Taehyung, his expression unreadable as he calmly responded to Jiho. But I knew him well enough to see the slight tension in his jaw, the way his grip on the lecture notes tightened. He was holding it together for the sake of professionalism, but inside, I knew he was angry.

As the class progressed, I found it harder and harder to concentrate. My thoughts kept drifting back to the past — to Jiho. I hadn’t expected to see him again, and now that he was here, everything felt more complicated than ever.

Once the lecture was over, the students began packing up their things. I wanted to get out of there quickly, but before I could leave, Taehyung called my name.

“Yn, could you stay back for a moment?” His voice was professional, but I could hear the undertone of concern.

I nodded and lingered behind as the rest of the students filed out, including Jiho. He glanced at me one last time before leaving the room, his expression unreadable.

Taehyung walked over to me, his face softening as he reached me. “Are you okay?”

I nodded, but I knew I wasn’t fooling him. “I’m fine. It’s just… strange having him here.”

He sighed, rubbing his temples. “I saw the way he was looking at you. I don’t like it.”

“I don’t like it either,” I admitted. “But Taehyung, he’s just my past. You’re my present — and my future.”

He smiled, pulling me into a gentle hug. “I know that, but I need you to promise me something.”

“What is it?”

“If Jiho does anything — anything at all — to make you uncomfortable, you tell me. Immediately.”

“I will,” I promised, leaning into his embrace. “You don’t have to worry.”

“I trust you, Yn. I just don’t trust him.”

From the hallway, I could see Taehyung and Yn talking alone in the biology lab. She was leaning into him, her face pressed against his chest. The sight made my chest tighten. I wasn’t expecting it to hurt this much — seeing her with him.

But I wasn’t going to give up that easily. I knew what we had was real, and I wasn’t going to let some professor stand in the way.
