Aanya

I found myself sitting on the terrace, staring out at the fading horizon. The cool evening breeze tugged at the strands of my hair, a fleeting relief from the warmth of the day. Lately, everything felt a little lighter, a little less suffocating. Raghav had that effect on me, like a soothing balm over an unhealed wound. His presence made it easier to breathe, made the world feel just a little less cruel. And yet, no matter how much comfort he brought, there was always a flicker of doubt deep within me, something that wouldn’t let me trust him entirely.

As the sun dipped lower, casting a warm orange glow over the terrace, I heard footsteps behind me. Raghav walked over and sat down beside me, not saying a word. We didn’t need to speak to fill the silence. His quiet companionship was enough.

"Do you ever think about what life would’ve been like... if things were different?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, almost afraid of my own question.

Raghav turned to me, his eyes thoughtful, as if he had been carrying that same question for years. "All the time," he said softly. "But I’ve learned we can’t control what life throws at us. We can only control how we respond."

I turned to look at him, letting his words sink in. "I never imagined this would be my life," I admitted, my fingers tracing the rough stone bench beneath me. "Sometimes it feels like a nightmare I can’t wake up from."

He moved a little closer, his shoulder brushing against mine. "You’re not alone in this nightmare, Aanya," he said gently. "I’m here... with you."

There was something in the way he said it that made my heart stumble in my chest. I glanced at him, really looked at him for the first time in weeks. His eyes held something kind, something steady, something that felt like a lifeline. And for just a moment, the torment, the pain, the endless dread—it all faded. In that fleeting moment, there was only us.

"You’re the only thing keeping me together," I confessed, my voice shaking slightly as the words slipped out. "I don’t know what I’d do without you."

Raghav smiled softly, his gaze never leaving mine. "You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for, Aanya. But I’m not going anywhere. I’m here for as long as you need me."

The space between us felt like it was shrinking with every word he spoke. My heart pounded in my chest, faster than it should, filling my ears with the sound of its rhythm. I had never felt like this before—this overwhelming mixture of fear and hope, confusion and longing. It scared me, and yet I couldn’t pull away.

Raghav’s hand brushed against mine before he intertwined our fingers. The warmth of his touch sent a wave of electricity through me, making my stomach flutter.

"Raghav..." I whispered, my voice barely audible as I looked into his eyes, searching for something I couldn’t quite name.

"Shh..." He brought my hand to his lips, pressing a soft kiss against my knuckles. "You don’t have to say anything."

My breath caught in my throat at the simple gesture. It was so intimate, so gentle, and it filled me with an emotion I didn’t know how to process. For so long, I had been trapped in a world where every touch hurt, every word cut. But this... this felt different. It felt safe.

For the first time in a long time, I allowed myself to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was something more to this life. Something worth holding onto.

And in that safety, in Raghav’s arms, I let myself hope, even if just a little.
