Cassandra slipped through the shadows of the library, her steps quick and soundless. The corridors were dim, the flickering torchlight casting long, ominous shadows along the stone walls. She knew where she was going—knew that once she entered the restricted section, there would be no turning back. But Regulus had called for her, and though the hour was late, she couldn't ignore him. Not now.
As she approached the iron gate, she saw him waiting on the other side, his silhouette sharp against the darkness. His face was pale, his expression drawn, as though something far heavier than usual weighed on him. He watched her silently, his eyes gleaming in the low light. When their eyes met, he raised his hand, and the gate swung open without a sound. She stepped through, and the heavy air of the restricted section closed in around her like a warning.
"Cassandra." His voice was low, more serious than she'd ever heard it. "You shouldn't be here. Not for this." He glanced at the rows of forbidden tomes that surrounded them, filled with knowledge far darker than most could imagine. "There are things you don't understand. Things you shouldn't want to understand."
She met his gaze, unflinching. "I know what I'm doing, Regulus."
"No, you don't." His voice tightened, a rare urgency creeping in. He stepped closer, his eyes searching hers. "You think you do, but this isn't just some choice you can undo. Becoming a Death Eater... It's not about power, or loyalty, or making a name for yourself. It's surrendering everything you are. Do you understand that? There's no glory in this, Cassandra. Just ruin."
She stiffened at his words, but her voice remained cold, resolute. "I've already made my decision."
His expression darkened, and for a moment, he looked as though he might reach out, as though he might physically stop her from walking any further down this path. "I know what you've heard, what they've promised you. But it's all lies. I've seen the truth, Cassandra. I've seen what they do to people—how they strip everything away until there's nothing left but fear and obedience. You're too smart for this. Too strong."
"I don't need you to protect me." Her words were sharp, final, but her heart raced beneath her calm exterior. She wasn't blind to the risks, but she wasn't going to be scared away.
Regulus's face twisted with something between frustration and sorrow. "I'm not trying to protect you because I think you're weak. I'm trying to protect you because I care. I don't want to lose you to this."
"You won't." Her voice softened for a moment, but only a moment. "I can handle it. I have to."
He held her gaze, his own filled with a quiet desperation she hadn't seen before. "Once you're in, there's no way out. Not alive. I don't want to see you destroyed."
Cassandra stared at him, her resolve hardening once more. "Then don't watch."
She turned from him, moving deeper into the darkness of the restricted section. Behind her, Regulus stood in silence, the weight of her choice pressing heavily between them. He had tried to save her, but she had already chosen her fate.
Cassandra moved deeper into the darkened aisles of the restricted section, the air thick with the scent of ancient magic and secrets better left untouched. She heard Regulus following behind her, his footsteps quieter than usual, as if even he was reluctant to disturb the stillness of the place. She didn't slow down, her mind set, her path clear. She knew what was coming, and she had made her decision.
"Cassandra." His voice came from just behind her, calm but laced with something heavier. Not desperation, but warning. He kept pace beside her, his expression unreadable in the dim light. "You shouldn't be here. Not for this."
