It was cold and dark. That's what I liked about this place so much. It was a place to get away and hide, if only for a little while. Rui was standing a ways away, looking around aimlessly. When he spotted me, he ran as fast as he could, sitting and bowing in front of me.
"Yami-san! I apologize for earlier and I know I have no right to ask you for anything, but please! I'm lost and need help! Do you know where we are?"
I glared down at him, closing my eyes and bringing my hands up to massage my temples.
"Stand Rui, I'll explain all of it to you." I sighed, holding out a hand to him. When all he did was stare at it, I shook it slightly, signaling for him to take it.
I pulled him to his feet when he did, making him stumble lightly.
"Rui, do you remember anything from when you were human?" I asked him, still holding his hand as we walked through the blackness.
He stays silent for a moment before shaking his head and looking up at me, confused.
"You died Rui. I killed you." I said bluntly, not looking at him as I said it. His breath hitches for a moment, before looking back at me.
"Why are you telling me this?"
"I control this place, The Abyss. I want to show you something."
The atmosphere around us suddenly shifted, turning to one of an old-style house. It was clean and smelled of lavender, a small futon with a palm design laid out in the middle of the floor. A child, almost identical to Rui, sat, coughing up a small amount of blood. Suddenly, a man came in through the sliding door facing the outside. He was tall and had dark hair, but the most memorable trait of his was his light red, almost pink, eyes. He offered to save the child, saying he pitied him. The child accepted.
"Rui," I started, only continuing when he responded with a small hum, looking back up at me. "Does any of this seem familiar in any way?"
"Should it?" He asked, shaking his head lightly.
I sighed, and the world around us morphed again. Now it showed the same boy, but he looked exactly like Rui. White hair, red eyes, white irises, and red dots littering his face. He stood in front of a man, hunched over and bloodied. Dead. Facing him were two older people, a man and a woman. The woman was crying, covering her face as tears leaked from her hands. The man was holding a knife, a tight look on his face.
The world flashed, shifting to see the same boy, sitting on the outside of the same room, legs dangling over the engawa. Behind him was the same man before, still wielding a knife, but bloodied and not breathing. Dead. Beside the boy was the woman, also bloodied, but still barely breathing. Alive.
The woman began murmuring something, almost unheard. The boy leaned closer, his eyes widening once he made sense of her words.
"I-I'm sorry I d-didn't pro-provide you with a strong, h-healthy body, Rui." Dead.
There was a bright, white flash, and it showed the man again, brandishing the knife in front of him, intent to kill.
"It's alright Rui," He stated, "We'll kill ourselves right after."
The man was crying. The look on his face wasn't from anger or stress, not even fear. He was sad. He was going to save his child. He would take his child's life, then his wife's, and his own, all so the boy could atone for the sin of killing another.
Everything went black again, voices ringing out around us. A deep voice was saying things, coaxing someone that everything would be alright, that it wasn't his fault.
