The sun had already set when I broke from the trees. My house was just down this road. My father would be furious at my departure, but I didn't care.
I raced down the street, unsure if I was actually human or not. My speed and agility suggested vampire, but my warm hands and heartbeat suggested human. Abby's words still echoed through my mind. "She's a halfling, Damon she's the halfling!"
I stopped in from of my house and stated it down. The whole home seemed to be drooping, even the windows. I let out a sigh and started down the cement sidewalk to my door. A movement in the window caught my attention and I stopped. My father's hands went up and he tilted his head back. I saw the whiskey bottle slip to the floor and I hear his aggravated roar come from the house.
He's drunk. He'll be even more violent. Swallowing my sudden fear, I went up the steps and knocked against the door quietly. A dull thud sounded behind the door and I waited until it swung open slowly. My drunk father leaned against the door frame, another whiskey bottle was in his hand.
"What do you want?" His words slurred and He reeked of alcohol. How many drinks had he had?
"I live here." I stated quietly, not wanting to feel his drunken wrath. His rancid breath was low and thick. His brown eyes were red-rimmed and danced around wildly.
"You don live 'ere." he hiccuped and the half full bottle crashed to the floor. The alcohol spread out quickly over the floor and He screamed.
Firm hands grasped my shirt as I was dragged into the house. A squeal of surprise left my lips and a drunken laugh came from my father. "Where the hell 'ere you? You needed to be Taught 'er place." A sharp sting came across my face and my father reared back again, this time his hand in a fist.
Rage and sorrow fueled my actions as I leaped from my father's grasp and pushed him over. I was tired of being his punching bag and I was finally sting enough to fight back.
I watched as he flew back and landed against the wall, creating a dull thud. His limp body fell to the ground and I turned away, disgusted with myself. Sure, he had beaten me, but he didn't deserve this. He didn't deserve all the hatred I had given him over the years, but yet I had thrown countless bursts of infuriated hate toward him. He didn't deserve this, he deserved better.
I went to the kitchen and pulled the phone off the receiver. The three simple numbers flashed through my mind and my fingers hovered over the keys. Guilt coursed though me and my shoulders slumped in shame of what I had become. I punched the buttons in and set the receiver down. The call connected almost instantly.
"911, what's your emergency?" The woman's voice was flat and unemotional. I stared at the blinking receiver and said nothing. "Hello?" Nothing. "I'm sending authorities to your location."
Satisfied, I turned back into the room where my father still was a lump against the wall. I stared at my feet when I heard it. A distant wail of a siren.
Before I could stop myself, my feet were moving out the door and into the lush grass of our backyard. The roads were lined with people and cars, so I sprinted farther back, toward the treeline. The lush foliage whipped by me and I felt the familiar rush of adrenaline enter my system. It felt amazing.
"Stop." My body seemed to have slammed against an invisible wall as all the air was squeezed out of my lungs. I gasped for breath and felt hands steady my shoulders. His husky voice rang out again, "Why do you continue to run?"
My breath was still short, but I managed to choke out a few words, "Why do you continue to be persistent?" I turned to face Damon just as a smirk crossed his face. He looked godly. His hair was windswept and looked perfect. Damon's eyes seemed to pull me in a trance until I found myself mere inches away from him. A gasp escaped my lips at our closeness.
