I smiled widely.
"5000! BOOM!"Bianca scowled playfully. "You're lying. It's only 4000."
"Nope! When your opponent attacks first, it's 5000. You lost your last life!"
"Darn," she muttered. I just laughed. I loved playing Mythomagic - I never got tired of winning every time.
It was late into the evening. We were the only ones left not in our dormitories. I didn't care, though, Mythomagic trumped anything. My sister was tired - really tired - but it was something I was oblivious to.
I grabbed the counters and started to reset them. "Come on, Bi, let's play again!"
The grin was wide on my face, my enthusiasm uncontained."No...not again..." Bi groaned, but she grabbed the god deck and tried to shuffle.
I giggled. "Bi, how do you not know how to shuffle a deck?"
I was already well aware that she couldn't shuffle a deck, I just couldn't resist teasing her again. She ignored me, rolling her eyes.
I waited for her to finish her lousy attempt, shuffling the terrain tiles and splitting them into two decks. Bianca didn't collect anything. I didn't think she'd opened a Mythomagic pack in her life (something I couldn't even comprehend) so we had to split my fortunately huge collection in two.
Eventually, she finished. By the time she was done, I'd split the terrain tiles, rearranged the figurines, reset the counters and found the dice (we'd lost one a few rounds ago.) It's not that hard to shuffle, is it?
I checked my terrain tiles, and a grin overtook my face.
"Oh, geez..." she sighed. At this point, she knew what that meant.
We played for what seemed like hours. I.
"Roll dice...4+3...ten to hit," Bi mumbled wearily.
"Hits!" I yelled enthusiastically. "3500 base attack points, +500 from items. Guess what that means!"
She groaned, moving the counters and knocking her figurine down. She laid her head on the table. "Only 500 health left...you win. Again."
"YES! Mythomagic RULES!" I exclaimed.
As I made a move to shuffle the deck, I said, "You know, it's all about strategy. Mine is...well, I shouldn't tell you. What's yours? I'll help you improve it."
Bianca didn't say anything.
"Bi?"
"Biii-ii..."
I leaned over, and just as I was about to shake her shoulder, I heard a light snore.
I pushed her over lightly until I could see her face. My eyes widened. Now I wasn't caught up in the game, I could see her huge eyebags clear as day.
I felt stupid. Now, I realised just how tired she'd been - the yawns, the droopy eyes, the rapid blinking that I'd shrugged off as a mood swing.
She'd stayed up four hours...to play Mythomagic...with me?
Warmth crashed over me, and I realised the overprotective sister act I'd hated so much was just...love.
As I carried my sister up into her dorm, I promised myself: I'd love her with all my heart. And if anything were to happen to her, it would be my fault. Because that would mean I didnt do everything I could to stop it.
Later that night, just before I fell asleep, I remember thinking, "Mythomagic rules. But only when both people enjoy it."
