Months passed, and the haunting became a distant memory. The nights were peaceful, free from the paralysis and the shadows that had once gripped Mike's every waking moment. He returned to work, reconnected with his friends, and began to rebuild his life, piece by piece.
But late at night, when the world was quiet and still, Mike would sometimes wake up in the dark and feel the faintest whisper of something stirring at the edges of his mind. A shadow, barely visible, flickering at the corner of his vision before vanishing as quickly as it came.
He would lie there, staring at the ceiling, waiting for the darkness to return.
But it never did.
Mike had won his battle with the shadows. But some battles, he knew, left scars that never fully healed.
And as he lay there in the quiet, he whispered one final word into the darkness.
"Goodbye."
