The bell over the café door jingled softly, signaling another customer's arrival. Lizzy didn't look up right away, too focused on wiping down the counter and refilling the coffee beans. It was a quiet afternoon, the kind of day she liked—no distractions, no chaos, just the slow hum of the café.

She finally glanced up, her eyes catching sight of the person standing at the counter. They were new. She hadn't seen them around town before, or at least not here in the café. Lizzy took a deep breath, reminding herself to stay calm, to blend in, to keep the smile easy and polite.

"Hi, what can I get for you?" Lizzy asked, her voice steady.

Y/N smiled, glancing at the menu. "What's good here? I'm kinda new in town, so I figured I'd ask the expert."

Lizzy felt a flicker of something—an instinct to stay guarded, but also a strange pull toward the newcomer. She forced her smile to remain neutral, trying not to let the curiosity slip into her eyes. "The house blend is pretty popular," she said, keeping it simple. "Or if you want something stronger, I'd recommend the espresso."

Y/N chuckled, their eyes bright with amusement. "House blend sounds good. I'll go with that. Thanks...?"

Lizzy blinked, realizing Y/N was waiting for her name. She hesitated for a fraction of a second before replying, "Lizzy."

"Nice to meet you, Lizzy," Y/N said, their smile lingering. "I'm Y/N."

Lizzy nodded and turned to make the coffee, trying to push down the odd flutter in her chest. She'd had plenty of customers before, plenty of brief, friendly conversations, but something about Y/N was... different. There was an ease about them, something warm and welcoming that made Lizzy feel like she didn't have to keep her guard up so high.

Still, she kept her answers short, careful not to reveal too much.

Y/N, however, didn't seem bothered by the silence. They leaned casually on the counter, glancing around the café as if taking it all in. "I like this place," Y/N said, their voice light. "It's got a nice vibe. Do you work here often?"

Lizzy shrugged slightly, setting the cup of coffee in front of them. "Yeah, most days."

"Cool." Y/N took a sip, their eyes flicking back to Lizzy. "I'm new in town—just moved here, actually. Still trying to get a feel for everything."

Lizzy nodded, unsure of how to respond. She didn't want to get into a conversation about her own past—about how she had only recently arrived herself, how she was still learning to navigate this quiet life she had chosen. So she kept it simple. "It's a nice town. You'll like it here."

Y/N smiled again, but this time, there was a flicker of something else in their expression. Curiosity. "You been here long?"

"Long enough," Lizzy replied, her voice careful. She didn't want to lie outright, but she wasn't about to tell Y/N the truth, either. "It's quiet. People keep to themselves."

"Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for," Y/N said with a small laugh. They took another sip of their coffee, but Lizzy noticed something strange. The air around them seemed to shift slightly, a sudden coolness spreading through the café. It was subtle, but enough for Lizzy to notice.

She narrowed her eyes for a brief moment, wondering if it was just her imagination. The temperature change felt... familiar, in a way she couldn't quite place.

Y/N didn't seem to notice. They set their cup down and looked up at Lizzy again, a question lingering in their gaze. "I'm sorry if this is weird, but you seem... I don't know, kind of reserved. Have you lived here long?"

Lizzy felt a pang of anxiety, her instinct to retreat flaring up. "Yeah, something like that," she muttered, trying to steer the conversation away from herself. "You said you just moved here?"

Y/N nodded, sensing her discomfort and backing off the personal questions. "Yeah. Needed a fresh start, I guess. This place seemed... peaceful. Thought I'd give it a shot."

Lizzy gave a small, polite smile. "It's good for that."

There was a brief pause before Y/N spoke again, their tone softer this time. "I get it, though—wanting to start over."

Lizzy glanced at them, a flicker of recognition in her eyes. Something about the way Y/N said it struck a chord with her, but she quickly pushed the thought away. She couldn't get involved. She couldn't let anyone in, especially not someone who seemed to have their own struggles.

The air shifted again, this time warmer. Lizzy frowned, feeling the sudden change in temperature. She looked at Y/N, who seemed completely unaware of it, but there was something about them that made Lizzy wonder. Could it be...?

Y/N caught her gaze and smiled, a little sheepishly. "Sorry, I didn't mean to make things awkward. I just... I don't know. You seem like someone who gets it. The whole starting over thing."

Lizzy hesitated, then gave a small nod. "Yeah. I get it."

For a moment, there was a shared understanding between them—two people both running from something, both trying to find a sense of peace in this quiet town. But Lizzy couldn't let herself dwell on it. She couldn't let herself get too close.

"Anyway," Y/N said, breaking the moment with a smile, "thanks for the coffee. I'll be back, I'm sure."

Lizzy nodded, feeling the tension in her chest ease slightly. "Take care."

Y/N gave her one last smile before heading toward the door, the warmth of their presence lingering in the air even after they were gone. Lizzy stood there for a moment, her hands resting on the counter, her mind whirling with questions. Who was Y/N, really? And why had the temperature shifted so drastically during their conversation?

She shook her head, trying to brush the thoughts away. It didn't matter. She had her own secrets to keep. But as she glanced at the door where Y/N had just exited, she couldn't help but wonder if their paths would cross again.

And if, despite everything, she wanted them to.
