It was one of those perfect afternoons where everything felt just right. Lizzy and Y/N had decided to spend the day out, walking through a quiet park just outside the city. The crisp air carried the scent of autumn, and the leaves crunched under their feet as they strolled along the winding path. Everything between them felt effortless. The tension from earlier days had faded, and they had fallen into an easy rhythm of companionship and love.
But Lizzy had always known that perfection was fragile, and that it only took one moment for the cracks to start showing.
As they walked, Y/N brought up the idea of taking a trip together.
"I was thinking," Y/N said, brushing a few stray leaves from their jacket, "it might be nice to go somewhere for a weekend. Maybe a cabin in the mountains? Just the two of us."
Lizzy's heart warmed at the idea, but a small pang of anxiety bloomed in her chest. She smiled, trying to push the feeling aside. "That sounds amazing. A few days away from everything would be perfect."
Y/N grinned and nudged her playfully. "Great, then it's a plan. I'll start looking for places."
They continued walking, Y/N excitedly listing potential destinations, when suddenly, a voice called out behind them.
"Wanda?"
Lizzy's entire body tensed, her heart skipping a beat. That name—it had been so long since she'd heard it spoken aloud, and even longer since she'd been addressed by it.
She turned slightly, just enough to see a woman approaching from the other direction. Her eyes were wide with recognition, and she was already halfway across the path, making a beeline toward them.
Lizzy's mind raced. She couldn't let this happen. Not here, not now.
"I'm sorry," Lizzy said quickly, stepping forward to intercept the woman before she could get any closer. "You must have me confused with someone else."
The woman stopped, looking momentarily confused. "Oh, I—sorry. I thought... you look just like someone I knew. Wanda Maximoff?"
Lizzy forced a smile, her heart thudding in her chest. "No, I'm afraid you've got the wrong person. My name's Lizzy."
For a moment, the woman just stared at her, clearly not convinced. But after a few seconds, she blinked and offered an awkward smile. "Oh... well, I guess I was mistaken. Sorry to bother you."
As the woman walked away, Lizzy stood frozen, trying to compose herself. She could feel Y/N's gaze on her, and she knew—she just knew—that Y/N had picked up on something.
The silence between them stretched as the woman disappeared down the path, and Lizzy's pulse still hadn't slowed. She turned to Y/N, attempting to plaster a calm expression onto her face, but Y/N was watching her, brows furrowed.
"Lizzy," Y/N began cautiously, "what was that?"
Lizzy swallowed hard, struggling to keep her voice steady. "Just a case of mistaken identity, I guess. She must've thought I was someone else."
Y/N didn't say anything for a moment, just kept studying her. The usual warmth in Y/N's eyes was replaced by something more careful, something guarded.
"She seemed pretty sure," Y/N said quietly, a hint of curiosity creeping into their voice.
Lizzy forced a laugh, though it sounded too light, too forced. "People say I have one of those faces. It happens sometimes."
Y/N nodded slowly, but Lizzy could see the doubt in their expression—the tiny seed of suspicion that had been planted.
For the first time, Lizzy saw Y/N hesitate. Y/N's fingers twitched at their side as if they were debating whether to push further or let it go. Finally, Y/N took a deep breath, glancing away for a second before returning their gaze to Lizzy.
"Well," Y/N said, their voice still soft but a bit more guarded now, "I guess it was just a coincidence then."
Lizzy felt her heart sink. She knew Y/N was trying to brush it off, but the tension in the air was undeniable. The moment had shifted. Y/N had always trusted her, but now Lizzy could feel the first sliver of doubt beginning to take root.
The rest of the walk felt different, quieter. Y/N still smiled, still held her hand, but the carefree ease from earlier was gone. They talked about other things, light topics, but there was an underlying unease in Y/N's eyes that Lizzy couldn't shake.
At one point, Y/N stopped mid-conversation, as though they were about to say something but thought better of it. Instead, they simply shook their head and continued walking.
The silence between them lingered long after they returned to Y/N's apartment.
Later that night, as they sat on the couch, Lizzy could feel the weight of Y/N's gaze on her again.
Y/N finally broke the silence, their voice careful. "You know... I've always felt like you were holding something back. Like... there's a part of you I don't really know."
Lizzy's breath caught. She turned to Y/N, her heart pounding. "What do you mean?"
Y/N hesitated, choosing their words carefully. "It's just... you never talk about your past much. I mean, we've been together for a while now, and I don't even know where you grew up, or anything about your family."
Lizzy's stomach twisted with guilt. She'd been so careful, so deliberate about what she shared with Y/N. But now, faced with the person she cared about more than anything, she felt the walls closing in.
Y/N continued, their voice gentle but insistent. "I don't want to pressure you into telling me anything you're not ready to share. But I can't help feeling like there's something you're hiding."
Lizzy looked down at her hands, her mind racing. She wanted to tell Y/N everything. She wanted to be honest, but how could she? How could she explain her past without losing everything?
She forced herself to meet Y/N's eyes, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "I'm not hiding anything... I just don't like talking about the past much. It's nothing interesting, I promise."
Y/N studied her, the doubt still lingering in their expression, but after a moment, they gave a small nod. "Okay," they said softly. "I trust you."
But Lizzy could feel it—Y/N was starting to pull away, even if just a little. The trust between them had been shaken, and though Y/N hadn't confronted her fully, Lizzy knew this was just the beginning.
