Lira's POV
I looked up to see a man standing before me, clad in attire that seemed to merge with the shadows around us. His sleek, form-fitting tunic was made from a shadowy, almost iridescent fabric that shimmered subtly in the dim light. Over his tunic, he wore a hooded cloak that draped heavily, its deep black color absorbing the light. The cloak was edged with a faint dark purple trim, a subtle yet distinct nod to the Night Syndicate's colors. His hands were covered with shadowy gauntlets that absorbed light, giving them an almost ethereal appearance. Around his waist was a black belt, fitted with various pouches and compartments for his tools. As my gaze finally settled on his face, I saw he wore a black, half-mask that covered the lower part of his face, leaving only his intense eyes visible.
The shadows that had been crawling around my hands began to retreat slowly back toward the trees. The man in front of me dropped his hood, revealing shaggy, dark black hair. Some of it fell over his eyes, while the rest laid loosely over his ears. He then removed the mask, tucking it into one of the pouches on his belt.
I glared up at him, my voice steady despite the turmoil of the recent encounter. "Are you here to try and kill me too?" I demanded.
He chuckled softly, a sound that seemed to blend with the night. "If I were here to do that, my shadows would have taken care of you long before you even saw me," he replied smoothly.
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion as I processed his words. So, those shadows were his.
"Wait, I've seen those shadows before. How do you know my name?" I asked, my curiosity piqued despite the dire situation.
The man extended a hand toward me, a gesture that seemed both casual and purposeful. "My name is Caius, and I am from the Night Syndicate," he introduced himself, his voice carrying a calm confidence.
I scoffed, brushing his hand away dismissively. "Leave," I ordered, the word sharp and final.
Caius raised an eyebrow, seemingly unfazed by my reaction. "You're not even going to thank me for saving you?" he asked, a hint of amusement in his tone as I struggled to stand.
"Saving me? I had it covered," I snapped, turning back toward Ayla, who was beginning to stir from her unconscious state.
Ayla groaned softly, her eyes fluttering open as she started to regain consciousness.
"Yeah, totally looked like you had it handled alright," Caius remarked, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
I shot him a sharp glare as I knelt beside Ayla, helping her sit up against the tree. "What do you want from me?" I asked, my tone edged with frustration.
Caius smirked, that same smug expression still plastered across his face. "Ah, that's the question of the day, isn't it?"
I rolled my eyes, turning back to Ayla to make sure she was steady. Once she was more comfortable, I faced Caius again, my palms turning upward, summoning flames that flickered angrily in each hand. "Leave," I growled, the fire casting a warm glow over my skin.
He chuckled and shook his head slowly. "According to the fight I just watched, those flames don't do much for you." He nodded toward the fire in my hands.
I narrowed my eyes, my suspicion growing. "You've been watching me, haven't you?" I asked, tilting my head slightly.
His lips curled into a wicked smile. "Smart girl."
"Lira?" Ayla's weak voice pulled my attention away from the shadowy man in front of me.
"I'm right here," I reassured her, turning back, but just as I did, a searing pain shot up through my thigh. I gasped and collapsed onto the ground, the dagger still embedded deep in my leg now pulsing with a throbbing ache. My fingers wrapped around the hilt as I gritted my teeth. "Fuck, that hurts," I hissed, trying to steady my breathing, but the pain was relentless.
