Lira's POV
Over the next few weeks, my days became a grueling, relentless cycle. I woke up at the ass crack of dawn, muscles protesting before I even opened my eyes, knowing what was coming. Four hours of brutal training with Caius, followed by a quick break before plunging into another four hours with Thalia. The soreness in my body eventually began to fade, my muscles growing accustomed to the punishment, but the fights? The magic? They weren't getting any easier.
Each day was a new test of endurance, both physical and mental. Caius pushed me past my limits, his techniques ruthless and unrelenting. And today was no different.
I hit the mat hard, the wind knocked out of me as my back slammed against the unforgiving surface. A growl escaped my lips before I could stop it, frustration boiling over from yet another defeat at Caius' hands.
From where he stood, Caius smirked, watching me with those infuriatingly smug eyes. He knew exactly what he was doing—pushing me, taunting me, and driving me toward the edge of my temper. I could feel the anger stirring inside, hot and wild, and with it came the familiar shift in the air around me.
"Come on, little shadow. Let's see what you've got," Caius taunted, his voice laced with a teasing challenge. His smirk deepened, knowing exactly how to provoke me. Especially with that new nickname he came up with for me.
I glanced down at my hands, and to my surprise, gray tendrils of smoke were curling from my fingertips, dripping like water onto the floor before snaking their way across the mat. The sight mesmerized me for a split second. I had never done this before. But before I could fully comprehend it, the room darkened. Caius' own shadows began to emerge from the corners of the room, thick and inky black, merging with the dim light.
He stood across from me, the wicked grin still firmly in place. "Let's see exactly what Thalia's been teaching you, hmm?" he said, his voice a velvet purr filled with mocking amusement.
My eyes narrowed into a fierce glare, anger fueling the heat bubbling under my skin. These past few weeks had been a constant battle, not just against Caius' training, but against him. We were always at each other's throats, never missing a chance to challenge or irritate the other. He seemed to enjoy it, thriving off the tension between us. Today was no exception.
But this gray smoke... it was new. Something I had yet to understand. My powers had been evolving, piece by piece, under Thalia's guidance, but this—this felt different. It felt dangerous.
I rose slowly from the mat, never breaking eye contact with Caius, who stood with his arms crossed, waiting for my next move. The smoke continued to flow from my hands, slithering across the floor like serpents, meeting his shadows halfway. They twisted together, black and gray, swirling in a silent dance as our powers collided.
"Focus," Caius said, his tone shifting from teasing to serious. "Your emotions fuel your magic, but if you lose control, it'll consume you."
I clenched my fists, trying to steady the torrent of emotions raging inside me. The gray smoke around me flickered, responding to my mood, and I took a slow breath, willing the anger to settle into something I could use.
Caius moved then, fast and silent, lunging toward me with that predatory grace of his. I barely had time to react, raising my hands instinctively, the gray smoke flaring up in defense. Tendrils lashed out toward him, but he was quicker, dodging the attack with ease. His shadows surged forward, wrapping around my legs like iron chains, pulling me off balance.
I hit the ground again, hard, and bit back a curse as pain shot through my back. Caius loomed over me, his eyes glinting with amusement and something else—something darker.
