PART ONE
Zach and Mia drove to their new home while quarreling in the car.
"If you hadn't lost all the money, we wouldn't be going to this wrecked house now," Mia said.
"Can't you do anything but complain?," Zach replied.
"I wish for once you would consider having a real job," Mia signed.
"I do have a real job!" Zach said.
"Really? What has the 'job' gotten you? A wrecked home and an ending marriage."
Zach initially remained silent about the situation, but his silence didn't last long. Before they knew it, they found a new topic to argue about. Their marriage was heading towards divorce, and the marriage counselor had given them two months to try and work things out. However, it seemed like their relationship was beyond repair.
As they reached the ghostly villa, they tapped on the door, which opened independently. They headed inside. The villa was swept clean!
"Had the cleaners been here?" Mia asked.
"No, not that I know of," Zach replied, sounding as surprised as Mia.
"I am going to unpack and shower," Mia said.
Zach nodded. "Two more months," he thought.
Zach opened the lobby door outside and entered the surprisingly well-kept little flower garden.
"I wish I knew who kept this place so nice and tidy," he said.
"That would be me." A voice said behind him, but as he turned around, no one was there.
"Great! I cannot afford to move out of this place even if it is hunted," he said.
"So let me introduce myself then." The voice said.
As Zach abruptly turned around, he saw an elderly ghost floating above the ground and grinning at him.
"BOO!" he said.
Zach remained silent.
"What are you trying to do?" he asked the ghost.
"It's is obvious? I am trying to scare you!" the ghost replied.
"Not luck there," Zach grinned," my personal life is way scarier than you can ever be."
"Come on! Can't a ghost be a ghost?"
"I am not saying you can't."
"But you are not scared after seeing me. You are hurting my feelings."
"Feelings? But you are dead!"
"Don't be so rude."
"I AM NOT RUDE!" Zach suddenly screamed. "I am never rude, and yet everyone blames me! Am I not allowed to crack under pressure and have a bad mood sometimes ?"
" I feel you, mate."
"You are a ghost. How can you feel?"
"I have more experience of life than you. I am Edward," the ghost introduced himself.
"Name's Zach."
"Is this how this generation introduces themselves? Interesting," Edward said.
"So, you owned this house?" Zach asked.
"I believe so," Edward replied.
"This house has been passed down my generation, from my grandfather to my father and then to me," Zach explained.
"I see. That means we are related!" Edward said.
"I guess so."
"So, why do you think everyone blames you?"
Zach took a deep breath. Edward is a ghost, and who would believe a ghost?
"It all started when I constantly switched jobs because of my ego. Anytime anyone says something to hurt me, I get enraged and eventually fired. I got sick and tired of that lifestyle. So did my wife. She was the one running our family. I was just a mere sidekick. She did everything. While I just stayed at home. So, I came up with the idea of opening a start-up business. I poured all my money and my wife's into it, and it was a significant fat loss. The company would soon be shutting down. We lost all our money and all our love. We have been growing distant lately. When the company failed, I fell into a habit of wanting to stay home and eat at home and seldom wanted to go out. That didn't sit well with my wife. She liked to get out of the house now and then. Nasty quarrels broke up among us, and eventually, we fell apart. To be honest, Edward, I don't deserve her," Zach explained.
"Zach, you admitted everything to be your fault and stuck up to the truth. It takes courage to do that, and if you have that courage. I think you can swallow a few rude words that are said to you," Edward replied.
"What do you mean?" Zach asked.
"Listen, when 10 people say you are the worst, does it mean you are the worst? No. People can be wrong. Their opinions of you don't matter. Do you know why? Cause their opinion will change over time. People are not concerned about you until you profit them in some way. So, you can throw their opinions out of your head. But do you know whose opinion does matter? Yours. If you tell your brain it is a failure, it will think it is a failure, and eventually, you will become impaired at what you were good at. So, Zach, don't give up on yourself. Don't call yourself a failure."
"Wow! You know a lot."
"I know, now tell me, what do you want? And what you are willing to keep up with," Edward said.
"I always wished...," Zach started.
But the rest of his sentence was silenced by a scream from upstairs.
"Mia!" Zach screamed.
