"And she had the nerve to not even mention all that she did. After saying that she gives me 'liberties and privileges' I don't deserve, like she doesn't subject me to much worse than everyone else endures," I complained to Steve. He was probably expecting me to be sexy and at 2 am maybe I should've been but I couldn't help but complain.
He looked tired, he had mentioned how bad the jet lag was, but that didn't stop him from making a disagreeable face at my comment.
"You think she's given me more than I've earned?" I ask, getting a bit offended.
"No, it's not that," He defends quickly, "It's just... well her last Secretary quit because she was an asshole to her and-"
"Did she tell you that?"
"I mean it was common knowledge, she barely looked at her and would sometimes even in meetings call her out for her mistakes. She's like that with everyone but.... She hasn't done that with you."
"Maybe because I do my job the way I'm supposed to," I say.
"I'm not doubting that babe it's just what-"
"And maybe she quit because Romanoff and her hooked up or something? I wouldn't put that past her. Maybe their tension had nothing to do with Romanoff being bitchy."
Somehow my anger had made me switch sides into defending my boss but truly it didn't sound like something she'd do. Sure she was being an asshole, but I had been pretty unruly in a way I hadn't been before and that's what has caused this shift between us or at least that's how I saw it.
The idea of a bunch of men sitting around talking badly about Miss Romanoff made me angry, I had seen the hard work and care she put into every decision. She never yelled at anyone, just had a slightly annoyed tone in her voice when she didn't agree with something and somehow to these people she was an 'asshole'.
Disregarding my personal space was being an asshole, wanting to run a successful company by being strict was not.
"No, yeah of course," He backtracks, "I didn't mean it like that I just meant, that's what the rumor is. People just notice the difference."
"People? They talk about me?"
"N-No, babe, no," He says, an obvious lie.
"What do they say?" I ask curiously.
"I- I don't know," He tried but he wasn't a very good liar.
"What do they say Steve?"
"It doesn't matter, okay, they're just stupid office rumors. You and I know that they aren't true, it doesn't matter what they think. They just say things to make the world around them more interesting."
"I want to know what interesting things they say about me."
"Y/N, baby-"
"Now," I say directly. He sighs and gulps.
"They- they say that you're sleeping with her, that the special treatment you get is because you- well you do her sexual favors," he explains nervously.
"And you hear those things about me and you don't defend me?" I ask angrily.
"I have I-"
"Okay whatever, it's late, I'm going to bed."
"No, babe please don't-"
I hung up the phone and cut him off. I slam my phone on my bedside.
I tossed and turned in bed finding it difficult to find a comfortable position.
