Chapter 5:

Summer 1942, Camp Toccoa, Georgia

The relentless summer heat pressed down from the sky. Insects buzzed unpleasantly around their heads, while in the distance the sound of an approaching vehicle could be heard.

Silently, they stood in line. The boredom was clearly noticable. No one dared to speak in fear that Sobel might suddenly appear.

And with reason: she already heard the unpleasant voice of Herbert Sobel coming around the corner and approaching them.

"You people are at the position of attention!" he shouted. As soon as the soldiers noticed Sobel, they immediately straightened up. Judith straightened her back and shoulders and fixed her gaze straight ahead with a neutral expression.

Sobel marched in front of them, his eagle eyes catching every tiny detail.

Judith was even more cautious today than usual. this time she didn't want to be the first to lose her weekend pass as she usually was

But Sobel had already found his first victim for the day.

"Private Perconte, are you blousing your trousers over your boots like a paratrooper?" he asked as the private handed him his rifle for inspection.

Sobel looked critically at Perconte and his rifle, while Perconte promptly responded as expected: "No, sir."

"Then explain these creases at the bottom," Sobel demanded a second later.

Of course, it was baseless; Perconte's trousers looked like everyone else's.

Still, Perconte answered as expected with a "No excuse, sir."

Sobel began his usual speech: "Volunteering for the parachute infantry is one thing, Perconte, but you've got a long way to prove you belong here."

Judith felt bad as she watched Perconte being punished. It wasn't his fault, yet he was once again the target of Sobel's ire.

Judith was pulled from her thoughts as Sobel unceremoniously revoked Perconte's weekend pass.

"Name?", Sobel asked the next one.

"Luz, George," Luz replied through clenched teeth.

"Dirt in the rear sight aperture," Sobel declared, though he hadn't even properly looked at the rifle. "Pass revoked."

Judith held her breath as Sobel skipped over a few men. Would he finally pass her by today?

Sobel skipped her. She couldn't believe it. She resisted the urge to exhale too loudly, aware that any sign of relief could make her his next target. Instead, he stopped next to Martin.
