Juliya sat in the back of the café, nursing her coffee as she stared out the window. It was a quiet place, tucked away from the usual hustle of school, and she often came here when she needed to think. Today, her mind was swirling with thoughts she couldn’t shake, all centering around one person—Sean.
She didn’t know when it had happened exactly, but over the past few months, she had found herself drawn to him in ways she hadn’t expected. Sean wasn’t the loudest or the most popular guy in school, but that’s what Juliya liked about him. He was thoughtful, kind, and always seemed to be lost in his own world, as if he were carrying a secret no one else knew.
The problem was, Juliya wasn’t blind. She had seen the way Sean looked at Sia. It was the kind of look that didn’t leave room for anyone else. He had feelings for her, that much was obvious, and as much as it hurt to admit, she knew she didn’t stand a chance as long as his heart was set on someone else.
Still, Juliya couldn’t stop herself from feeling something for him. They had been friends for a while, and she cherished the quiet conversations they shared. Sean wasn’t like the other guys who tried to impress her with jokes or stories. He listened, really listened, and Juliya appreciated that more than he probably knew.
But despite their friendship, she kept her feelings hidden. She had always been good at hiding her emotions, at pretending she was fine even when she wasn’t. Sean saw her as a friend, nothing more, and she didn’t want to risk losing what they had by making things awkward. So, she kept her distance, even though it felt like her heart was being pulled in two different directions.
As she stirred her coffee absentmindedly, her phone buzzed with a message. It was from Jack. She frowned. Jack was someone she had always been wary of. His reputation as a player preceded him, and she had never been interested in being just another girl in his revolving door of relationships. He had tried to flirt with her a few times, but she had brushed him off, knowing full well he wasn’t serious.
But lately, Jack had been different. He had toned down his usual arrogance, and there was something more sincere about his attempts to get to know her. Juliya wasn’t sure what to make of it. Was he genuinely interested in her, or was it just another one of his passing infatuations? She couldn’t tell, and part of her didn’t want to find out.
She glanced at the message. It was simple—just a “Hey, what are you up to?”—but it made her feel uneasy. Jack’s persistence was starting to wear her down, and she didn’t know how much longer she could keep dodging his advances. She didn’t want to lead him on, but she also didn’t want to hurt his feelings.
Juliya sighed, her thoughts drifting back to Sean. No matter what Jack did, it wouldn’t change the fact that her heart was already taken. She wished things could be different, that Sean could see her the way she saw him, but she knew that wasn’t likely. He was too focused on Sia to even notice her.
Finishing her coffee, Juliya packed up her things and left the café, her mind still racing. She knew she had to make a choice soon—whether to give Jack a chance, even if her heart wasn’t fully in it, or to continue hiding her feelings for Sean and remain stuck in a love that would never be returned.
As she walked down the street, the wind picking up around her, she couldn’t help but feel lost. Love was supposed to be simple, but right now, it felt anything but.
