Shanaya's POV:

I opened my eyes to a strange but familiar voice, which wasn’t coming from my alarm clock. It was my mother, as usual, yelling at my younger siblings to get ready for school.Beside me was my older sister, sleeping peacefully now that her college was over. Being the middle child comes with its advantages and disadvantages, but in my case, the disadvantages takes the lead.If I had to list all of them, it would take a few more chapters, so let's skip to just a few. For instance, my mother doesn't care that I also have to go to college in an hour and could use another 30 minutes of sleep before leaving. I barely got any sleep because I was busy working on some accounting problems last night.

And you may ask me where I suddenly got this passion to practice accounting problems late at night. It's because, in the last test, I was just two points away from coming in first. And who was first you may ask? Yes, it was Aurav Kapoor again. The head boy of the college and the one who believes I'm not good enough to be the head girl. But let's not ruin our mood early in the morning by thinking about someone I'm not interested in. I get up, freshen up, and get ready for college.

Our university is only 20 minutes away from my home. As soon as I arrive, I head to my first lecture room, where I meet my best friends, Samaira and Mayra. Samaira is shy, kind, and an introvert, and she is also the chief editor of the College. In contrast, Mayra is talkative, extroverted, and very cheerful.I met them on the first day of college. Samaira and I attended the same school in London before I moved to India, but we never ran into each other. We only knew each other’s names and that we existed in the same school. Without realizing it, Samaira messaged me from the group chat on WhatsApp one day before college, expressing her desire to be friends. That's when we discovered that we were both from the same school in London. Soon, when we met Mayra, Samaira and Mayra discovered that they had been classmates in high school after Samaira moved to India, but they only found out later in college. And that's how the three of us became best friends in our first year of college, and we are still best friends in our second year. Some may call it a coincidence, but I call it 'Destiny'.

I walk over to them and say hi. They usually arrive early together, and when they saw me, they both smiled widely and hugged me."Hey, what happened to you? You look so tired. Did you not get any sleep last night?" Samaira said, concern on her face."Oh yeah, I was just practicing some accounting problems, and I didn’t realize how late it had gotten. I'm fine," I replied with a cheerful smile."Aren't you taking your role as head girl a bit too seriously? I think you should also be concerned about your health," Mayra said with a pointed look.My friends think that ever since I became head girl in my second year, I have been challenging myself to improve more and more because of Aurav and his taunts. But that's not true. Or maybe it is. I don't know. "Guys I'm fine, stop lecturing me."I said while taking a seat between them on our usual bench.

"So, what are you covering in this week's newspaper, Samaira?" I asked. She became excited in response."Oh, for this week's article, we are interviewing the freshers and asking them questions like how they like the college and more. There is also going to be a special section in the newspaper dedicated to the couples of this college. This was Divya's idea. She wants people to know about the love stories of our college and how successful they always are.I'm not too sure about it, but she really wanted to do it." Samaira completes saying. "Wow, that sounds interesting," Mayra said sarcastically."I don't understand how people still believe that love is real," I said with an eye roll."Okay, I do believe love is real, but I don't think it comes easily to everyone. You're a lost case, Shanaya," Mayra said, laughing."What? Why do you think that?" I responded."Because you literally haven't had a crush since the day you were born! How is that even possible? Every human at least has a crush on someone," Mayra said, laughing. "Oh, like how you have a crush on Imaad, right?" Samaira teased Mayra. Now it was our turn to laugh. "What? No! Listen, Imaad is my brother's best friend, and he's not even a close option for me to have a crush on. You guys are just... ridiculous. How can you even think that? I really don't! Stop laughing!" Mayra said defensively."Okay, fine. We were just teasing you," Samaira said, patting Mayra on the head.

"Oh, wait! She did have a crush on someone," Samaira said, looking at me with a grin."What? Who? When?" Mayra asked."Oh, that guy in London—the one she met at the bookstore!"samaira replied. I wouldn't call it a crush since I didn’t even see his face. I was 15 and in London when I visited this bookstore. I was looking for a book called The 'Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon', which was on the top shelf. I tried to reach it but couldn’t. Suddenly, a guy came from behind and grabbed the book for me. I couldn’t see him because he was facing my back. "Why do they always make these kinds of books that makes us want to believe in destiny and love, but it's not real, is it?" he said in a low voice. He gave me the book, and as soon as I turned to look at him, he was already walking away, showing me his back. For the first time, I understood what it meant to have butterflies in my stomach. And thats it that's the only time I felt something in my heart for a stranger. "Now, don't jump to any conclusions. I never had a crush on anyone. He was just a stranger—nothing more," I said."Whatever you say, dear," Mayra teased.

The lecture hall suddenly fell silent as Siddharth Agarwal the (captain of  our college football team also the trouble maker of this college) and his friends entered. I don’t know why everyone is so scared of him. He walked in and... wait, did I just see him staring in our direction? It was brief, but he definitely did. Or... was it Samaira he was looking at?Weird. Soon after, the lecturer entered and the class began. We all took out our notebooks and started jotting down notes as the lecture proceeded.Okay, no more distractions. I need to focus so I can get good marks—specifically, more marks than Aurav., Speaking of the devil, where is Aurav? The class has already started, and he’s never late. Hmm, something doesn’t add up.
