The crisp autumn air nipped at Valerie's exposed skin as she jogged across the football field towards the gathered cheerleaders. Brittany trailed a few steps behind, still adjusting her ponytail. Despite the chill, both girls wore their Sanhattan High cheer uniforms – royal blue and white crop tops with matching skirts.

"Late again, ladies," Torrence called out, her voice carrying a hint of amusement rather than genuine annoyance. The cheer captain stood with her hands on her hips, dirty blonde hair pulled back in a high ponytail, blue eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Sorry, Torrence," Valerie said, slightly out of breath. "We got held up in bio."

Brittany nodded, adding, "Mr. Callahan wouldn't stop talking about mitosis."

Torrence rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "Well, now that our star twins are here, we can finally get started. Everyone, let's warm up!"

As the squad began their stretches, Valerie couldn't help but notice the way Torrence kept glancing at Brittany. There was something calculating in her gaze, something that made Valerie uneasy.

After warm-ups, Torrence clapped her hands to get everyone's attention. "Alright, ladies, we're going to work on our competition routine today. We need to nail that pyramid if we want to beat Westfield next month."

The squad moved into formation, with Valerie taking her usual spot at the top of the pyramid. She'd been the flyer since freshman year, her small frame and natural balance making her perfect for the role.

But just as they were about to begin, Torrence held up a hand. "Wait. I want to try something different today." She turned to Brittany, a wide smile spreading across her face. "Britt, how about you take a turn as the flyer?"

Valerie felt her stomach drop. She glanced at her sister, seeing the surprise and hesitation in Brittany's eyes.

"Me?" Brittany asked, her voice uncertain. "But Val always—"

"Exactly," Torrence cut in. "Val always does it. But you're just as small and agile. I think you could bring something fresh to the routine."

Valerie wanted to protest, to point out that they'd been practicing with her as the flyer for weeks. But something in Torrence's expression made her hold her tongue.

Brittany looked at Valerie, silently asking for permission. Valerie forced a smile and nodded. "Go for it, sis. Show 'em what you've got."

With visible reluctance, Brittany took Valerie's place at the base of the pyramid. Valerie moved to one of the supporting positions, trying to ignore the gnawing feeling in her gut.

"Okay, let's take it from the top!" Torrence called out.

The music started, and the squad began their routine. Valerie watched anxiously as Brittany was lifted into the air. Her sister's movements were hesitant at first, but she seemed to gain confidence as the routine progressed.

Then came the moment for the big finale – a complex dismount that Valerie had perfected over countless practices. She saw the flicker of fear in Brittany's eyes as she prepared for the move.

"You've got this, Britt!" Valerie called out encouragingly.

Brittany took a deep breath and launched into the dismount. For a split second, it looked like she might nail it. But then her foot slipped, and suddenly she was falling.

Time seemed to slow down as Valerie watched her sister plummet towards the ground. The spotters rushed to catch her, but they were a fraction too late. Brittany's head struck the hard turf with a sickening thud.

"Brittany!" Valerie screamed, rushing to her sister's side.

Brittany lay motionless on the ground, her eyes closed. A small trickle of blood ran from her temple.

"Someone call an ambulance!" Torrence shouted, her face pale with shock.
