Today was the day. The first of four trials awaited her as she stood at the doors of the castle, trying to will herself to push them open.
She had slept pretty decently and woke up feeling refreshed. The good vibes didn't last long though, as dread hung moved in like a storm cloud, and casted her morning in gloom. There was dread as she said goodbye to Deek, dread as she headed back to Gryffindor tower, dread as she changed into her adventuring clothes, and dread as she tried to eat her breakfast. Dread dread dread dread dread.
She should have come up with a mantra (motto). Something to repeat when these heavy feelings got too much. Maybe; I think I can? No. How about; yolo! Damn, no way- also not even close to true in this situation. She was still standing there, hand on the door, brain just stalling for time- when someone walked up.
"You have to push on them to get them to open-"
Feeling exceptionally jumpy, she found herself crashing into the door rather than doing something useful like turning around. She groaned, holding her forehead from the impact. She turned rather embarrassed towards the voice.
"Are you okay?" Ominis asked, thankfully not a smile in sight.
"Obviously I'm doing great" she said dramatically "although if this is an omen for the rest of my day I might not be doing so well later."
"I'm sure it's not-" he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small glass vial with a green shimmering liquid. "Here, take this- you should probably avoid starting your trip off with a headache."
She took the vile, but didn't uncork it. Instead she looked at it a little hesitantly, unsure of what she should do. Thankfully he was a mind reader and answered her worries,
"Don't worry, it's safe to take. Sharp looked over it before I finished and I even took some just to be certain." Jane sighed, glad she didn't need to voice her concern- and downed the bottle.
"I have some more for you actually-" he reached into his pocket and held out more little bottles. "I know you said you were preparing some for today, but I figure you can never have too much."
"Wow! Thank you Ominis!" She reached out to take the others. "I hope I didn't deplete your stash though. I can replace them when I get back-"
"It's fine," he said, waving her off with his now empty hand. "I brewed them this morning so it's not like I will be missing them."
"You brewed them this morning?" She felt a little surprised- it was barely early afternoon, he would have spent the whole morning making these.
"Well Professor Sharp was in his classroom, and there were other students doing makeup work so I figured it was as good a time as any."
Jane smiled. Maybe it was the Wiggenweld kicking in, or maybe the gesture from this sweet boy, but the cloud of dread didn't feel as heavy anymore.
"Thank you, I really appreciate it. Hopefully I won't need to go through them all, but it's nice to know they are there-"
She wanted to step towards him and wrap her arms around him in appreciation, but she hesitated. It didn't seem like hugging was really a form of affection he liked, and she didn't want to make him uncomfortable. She seemed to lay any of her gratitude on a little thicker than he seemed comfortable with, so she thought it would be best to just change the subject.
"Do you know if Sebastian is coming or-"
"He should be out there already. He said that he wanted to make sure he was ready for whenever you were."
