You and Evan sat on the edge of the bed in the soft glow of a dimly lit bedroom. The night was quiet, save for the occasional sigh that escaped between you two. It had been a year now—a year of hopes rising and falling, a year of tests and treatments, consultations and tears. A year of trying to conceive, only to be met with disappointment month after month.

You traced your fingers along Evan's arm, the warmth of his skin a small comfort amid the uncertainty that lingered between you guys. Your heart ached with an emptiness that was hard to describe, a feeling of longing that only grew with each passing cycle.

"I thought this would be easier," you whispered, your voice barely audible in the stillness of the room.

Evan looked down at you, his brown eyes soft yet clouded with a sadness of his own. He hated seeing you like this, carrying the weight of the struggles. His hand found yours, fingers intertwining in a gentle, familiar grip.

"I know," he murmured, pressing a kiss to your temple. "I did too."

They had entered this journey with hope and excitement, the dream of starting a family shining brightly before you guys. But over time, that light had dimmed, replaced by questions they didn't have answers to. Their lives had slowly revolved around ovulation trackers, doctor visits, and quiet prayers whispered into the night.

"I feel like I'm failing you," You admitted, your voice breaking.

Evan's heart clenched at your words. He immediately shook his head, turning to face you fully. "Hey, don't say that," he said gently but firmly. "This isn't your fault, y/n. It's not anyone's fault."

You nodded, though tears had already begun to well in your eyes. You wiped them away quickly, not wanting to burden him with your sadness, though you knew deep down that he felt it too.

"I just... I thought by now..." your voice trailed off as fresh tears threatened to spill over.

Evan pulled you close, wrapping his arms around you in a tight embrace. He held you as you sobbed quietly into his chest, his hand running soothingly through her hair. He wanted to take your pain away, to somehow fix what felt broken, but all he could do was be there, to hold you, to remind you that you guys were in this together.

"We're going to get through this," he whispered into your hair, his voice steady despite the weight in his chest. "No matter what happens, we'll figure it out. I love you."

"I love you too," you mumbled into his shirt, clutching onto him like he was the one thing tethering you to the ground.

You guys stayed like that for a long while, wrapped up in each other, both of you finding solace in the quiet. The clock on the nightstand ticked softly, and for a moment, the world outside their little bubble seemed far away.

Eventually, you pulled back, wiping your eyes with the back of your hand. You looked up at him with a tired smile, one that didn't quite reach your eyes but was filled with a quiet strength.

"Thank you," you said softly.

"For what?" Evan asked, brushing a strand of hair behind your ear.

"For being here. For being you."

He smiled, his thumb brushing lightly over your cheek. "Always."

The road ahead was uncertain, and the ache of not knowing when or if they would ever hold their own child lingered between you two. But in that moment, there was a quiet understanding. You guys didn't need all the answers. You just needed each other. And no matter what happened, you would face it together.

As you lay down that night, wrapped in each other's arms, Evan whispered one last promise into the dark:

"We'll keep trying. And even if it takes a little longer than we thought, we'll be okay. As long as we have each other."

Your breath hitched, but you nodded, your heart warming slightly at his words. You nestled into him, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath your hand. And for the first time in a long while, you allowed yourself to believe it.

No matter what the future held, you would be okay. Together.
