The murky depths of the lake swallowed her whole, a liquid tomb closing in around her. Shafts of sunlight penetrated the water's surface, dancing and refracting, creating an eerie, shimmering curtain that seemed to mock her desperate situation. The cold embrace of the water seeped into her bones, a stark contrast to the burning in her lungs as they screamed for air.

The girl's eyes, wide with panic, darted frantically in every direction. The underwater world was a blur of muted greens and browns, punctuated by the occasional flash of a startled fish darting away from her flailing limbs. Tendrils of her pink hair—'Pink?' a distant part of her mind questioned—floated around her face like some bizarre halo, obscuring her vision further.

As she sank deeper, the pressure building in her ears, her mind raced. Fragments of memories, sharp and disjointed, flashed through her consciousness like a broken film reel:

A dimly lit alley. The acrid smell of gunpowder. A man in a police uniform, his face a mask of determination and fear. The cold press of a gun barrel against her chest. The deafening crack of a gunshot, followed by searing, white-hot pain.

'I died,' she thought, the realization hitting her with the force of a physical blow. 'That cop shot me. I died. So how...?'

But if she had died, how was she here? Why was she drowning in a lake she didn't recognize, in a body that felt alien and unfamiliar? Nothing made sense, and the lack of oxygen was making it increasingly difficult to think clearly.

Instinct took over. Her arms windmilled wildly, her legs kicking out in uncoordinated, desperate movements. But her body felt wrong—smaller, weaker, untrained. She couldn't remember how to swim, couldn't recall if she had ever known in the first place.

The surface shimmered above her, a warped mirror of light and air. It seemed to taunt her, so tantalizing close yet impossibly out of reach. Her mouth opened in a silent scream of frustration and fear, but only a stream of bubbles escaped, carrying what little oxygen remained in her lungs up towards freedom.

'No,' she thought, a surge of defiance cutting through the panic. 'Not like this. I didn't survive a gunshot just to drown in some godforsaken lake.'

But her body betrayed her determination. The burning in her chest intensified, transforming into an unbearable pressure. Dark spots began to dance at the edges of her vision, and a curious lethargy started to seep into her limbs. Some primal part of her brain screamed at her to breathe, logic and self-preservation losing out to basic survival instincts.

Just as she felt herself slipping away, a disturbance in the water above caught her fading attention. A large splash sent ripples through the lake, and a blurred figure cut through the water towards her with powerful, practiced strokes.

Strong arms wrapped around her small frame—'Why am I so small?'—and suddenly she was moving upwards. The world spun around her as her savior propelled them both towards the surface with swift, sure movements.

When her head broke through the water's surface, and she gasped reflexively. The sudden influx of air sent her into a violent coughing fit as her body tried to expel the water from her lungs. Each cough was agony, but the sweet rush of oxygen was intoxicating.

"It's okay, I've got you!" A man's voice, firm yet reassuring, cut through the sound of splashing water and Sakura's own labored breathing. "Just breathe, nice and slow. That's it."

As her savior swam them both towards the shore, her mind reeled, trying to process what had happened. The voice sounded unfamiliar, yet a part of her seemed to recognize it, as if from a half-remembered dream.

'I died,' she thought again, the certainty of it clashing with her current, very much alive state. 'I know I died. So how is this possible?'

Her feet touched solid ground, and she stumbled forward onto her hands and knees. The lakebed was a mix of smooth pebbles and slimy mud, an unpleasant texture against her palms. She retched, expelling more lake water onto the muddy bank. The acrid taste of bile mixed with the earthy flavor of the lake water, making her gag again.
