Chapter 1- Sectors

My name is Tori. I'm in sector 4, farming and agriculture. This includes farming crops to feed all 10 sectors, dairy farming, as well as farming poultry and livestock.
Thanks to the scientists of sector 2, and the engineers of sector 3, we are able to do all of this almost as easily as it was done above ground, before the desolation.
All 10 sectors are important, and necessary. Sector 1 is medical doctors of all kinds, such as obstetricians, surgeons, and pediatricians. Sector 5 is water purification.
Sector 6 is service. Members include workers who prepare and serve meals, security workers who make sure everyone is where they should be and back in their units before curfew, janitors, and maintenance workers.
Sector 7 is caregiving. Caregivers are in charge of taking care of all childrens basic needs, getting them to school, the cafeteria at mealtime, and back to their dormitory before curfew. Children are grouped by age and live in dormitories until age 17 when they are assigned a sector and transferred to their units where they will live alone in small dwellings until paired for life.
   Sector 8 is teachers. Children are taught basic math, reading, writing, the basics of each sector, and tested in each category to be scored at age 17 and assigned a sector based on their highest score.
Sector 9 is reproduction. Only those of us with the most exceptional genetics are chosen to reproduce, in order to better the human race. Insemination is done artificially, and pregnant women are cared for by medical staff before, during and after each pregnancy. Women chosen to reproduce are only able to do so 4 times before the age of 35 and then are sterilized, retired, and chosen a different sector and allowed to pair and work in in their sectors like everyone else. Pairs are allowed to be intimate, but not reproduce offspring. Those of us not chosen to reproduce are given medication to prevent us from being able to.
  Sector 10, The council. The council is limited to only a small number of members, and they control every aspect of our society. They know what led to the desolation, and how to avoid it from happening underground. They make all the major decisions to keep society running with no major issues.
We've always been told the world above ground was desolate, dangerous, and forbidden. Very few people have been above ground since the desolation, and only membors of the council. Down here, we're protected, safe. Each sector has its own purpose.
Is this really what my whole life will consist of? Being completely controlled? No choice?
