As the colonizers found their way to Turtle Island, the job of Death grew to be too much. Land was taken from the Indigenous people by force. Even with a partner like Burrow, they needed more help to keep up. Burrow is a stout man of magic who wears a bucket hat, and a long black trench coat collar turned up, though it was not long enough to hide his tail. Burrow is a man made of a beaver's form and though you barely saw his face sometimes a scraggly beard would pop out with a sinister smile.
Death is far from how we pictured him. He does look like nothing but bones. However, he does not hide it with a long black cloak. When people say they see Death, it is more Burrow standing in front of Death. Most do not know this, but Death is blind. Burrow guilds Death to each person, and Death's powers take them to the next life. It is a lifeline to the next journey of a soul, wherever it may be. Death is known as one of the first to die in this universe, and each planet needed a Death. The universe control set this in motion as the schools for the souls set in. Each lesson learned the soul will move forward. If they did not learn their lesson. class would be repeated for them. Death is from another planet and his head elongated with his hair pulled back in a ponytail, he is much like a human though tall with a boney structure which was his last form, before becoming Death. Becoming a Death for a World was a great honor. You could enjoy life still, limited to sight, but still alive. For Death and Burrow, time went by differently. Seconds drawn out into hours in the life they live. Death had been given time to enjoy life and still do what was needed when someone dies.
However, the people of Earth started to grow outside of the limited abilities allowed. Expanding the population caused Death and Burrow to contact the universe control for help. They often went to the council and was sent back with sicknesses, plagues, and natural disasters to help get the population back down again. One death is enough to take care of one planet. The earth kept growing, and Death and Burrow would soon again be at the council for help.
Out in the odyssey of the stars was the council, stars themselves you may say. The glistening of the burning lights came together around a gold platform to attend the need of Death and Burrow.
The Master of all spoke up. "Planets expand and grow. We must find a way to keep your duties going, even as the population grows." His voice shook the ether.
Another attendee spoke up. "Well, earth is a very popular school, mostly all the souls gravitate to that direction."
"True and we can't keep cutting their lessons short for the control" The Master of all finished.
A grand light entered the space with wisps of red, pink, purple, blue mist following it. "We set the bar high" It echoed, settling into its space. "Death will control reapers, one in each town. That is set for the ones ready for the final test. We can make sure each town you enter, the first to pass will be chosen for this course. When every town has a reaper, you would check them. Make sure their course is going as it should for their final lesson."
The stars shined in agreement.
"That might help; how will we make it work?" The Master of all asked.
"Burrow will be given the knowledge of how to create such beings, swap out their location and make them forgettable, so they can live if they can learn their lesson. With the powers of Death to connect the lines to the people about to cross, they can still enjoy living in their quite way." The Grand light finished and gave it its blessing before moving through the stars once more.
With the blessings and knowledge from the council, Death and Burrow went to work. Back home, Burrow explained his plan that was given to him. "As the rule for calmness, each person with the job of death needs to be sent from one area to another when they die. No one should recognize any of the soul collectors." Burrow grew excited, for it had been a while since he created new beings. That is what they are, new life, new purpose. "As these people seem to create towns like it is nothing, we will take the first to die out of two towns and empower them and swap their locations." Burrow was scurrying around his den, getting all he needed to start the process.
