As the last bit of laughter faded in the quiet library, Sara tried to focus on the stack of books in front of her. But her mind kept drifting to Ethan and his teasing smile. How was she supposed to get anything done with thoughts of him swirling in her head?

Ethan leaned against the counter, looking too pleased with himself. “Alright, librarian,” he said with a playful grin, “I’ll let you get back to your important book work.”

Sara gave him a teasing look. “You better go. I have books to return to, and I don’t have time for your muffin challenge.”

He laughed and winked at her. “Oh, you’ll give in. Just wait and see.”

She rolled her eyes, but a smile crept onto her lips. “We’ll see about that. Now go before I kick you out.”

Ethan chuckled, giving a mock salute. “See you later.” With that, he left, and Sara felt the library grow too quiet, as if the fun had just left the room.

Staring at the book in her hands, she realized she wasn’t really reading. All she could think about was Ethan and how things felt different between them lately. Were they flirting? They joked around all the time, but now there seems to be something more.

Just then, her phone buzzed on the desk. She picked it up to see a message from Emily.

Emily: Hey! Don’t forget! Children’s party at the community center tonight. We need your ideas! See you at 6?

Sara smiled, relieved for the distraction.

Sara: I’m in! Can’t wait.

Setting her phone down, she grabbed her bag, eager to dive into the kids’ party planning. Helping with the party would be a lot easier than trying to sort out her feelings for Ethan. Maybe a few hours surrounded by laughter and crafts would help clear her mind.

As she left the library, she shook her head with a smile. Whatever was happening with Ethan could wait. Right now, she had decorations and games to plan.

Later that night, Sara arrived at the community center, arms full of party supplies. The room buzzed with excitement, and Emily was already busy with colorful streamers, her phone in one hand and a basket of balloons in the other.

“Hey, check this out,” Emily called out as Sara walked in. “I found the best decorations for the party—rainbow streamers and glitter everywhere! It’s going to be amazing!”

Sara dropped her supplies next to Emily and looked around. “This is fantastic! You really went all out.”

Emily beamed. “I will try. But we still need to figure out the games. We can’t let the kids get bored!”

“Right! Let’s brainstorm some fun activities,” Sara replied. “I was thinking about crafts and maybe a treasure hunt.”

As they discussed their ideas, Emily suddenly gave Sara a knowing look. “So... what’s going on with you and Ethan?”

Sara almost dropped a balloon. “What do you mean?”

“Oh, come on,” Emily said, throwing her hands up. “You two have been acting all flirty for ages. It’s obvious.”

Sara felt her cheeks heat up. “We’re just friends. Nothing more.”

Emily raised an eyebrow. “Friends? Even the kids are noticing! Last week, Timmy asked if you were dating!”

Sara groaned. “Why is everyone so curious?”

Emily shrugged. “That’s small-town life for you. But seriously, are you and Ethan a couple?”

Sara sighed and sat down on a nearby chair to think. “I don’t know. Sometimes it feels like we’re just having fun, but other times, it seems deeper. We’ve never actually talked about it.”

Emily leaned in closer, eager to know more. “But do you like him? It sure looks like it.”

Sara bit her lip, remembering all the moments with Ethan—the way he smiled at her, how their jokes felt different now. “Yeah,” she admitted quietly. “I think I do.”

Emily’s face lit up. “I knew it! So, what’s stopping you from telling him?”

“I guess I’m just scared,” Sara said, her voice trembling slightly. “What if it ruins our friendship? After what happened before, I can’t bear the thought of losing him too. I put everything on the line when I confessed last time, and it just… broke my heart into pieces.”

Emily’s expression softened as she moved closer. “I remember how hard that was for you. You were so vulnerable, and it didn’t turn out the way you hoped. But you can’t let that fear control you forever.”

Sara shook her head, frustration evident on her face. “I know, but what if I make the same mistake again? What if Ethan doesn’t feel the same way? I don’t want to go through that pain again.”

Emily reached out and gently tapped Sara’s hand, her touch soothing. “But what if he does feel the same? You’ll never know unless you take the risk. It could be worth it.”

“I just don’t want to ruin what we have,” Sara admitted, her voice cracking. “It’s so special to me, and I don’t want to lose him. I can’t go through another heartbreak.”

Seeing the distress in her friend’s eyes, Emily wrapped her arms around Sara in a comforting hug. “I get that. It’s scary to put yourself out there, especially after being hurt. But keeping your feelings bottled up might be harder in the long run. You deserve to be happy, and you deserve to find out how he really feels.”

Sara leaned into the hug, letting the warmth and support wash over her. “Maybe you’re right,” she said softly, her heart racing as she thought of Ethan. “It’s just hard to shake off that fear. I keep replaying the last time in my mind.”

Emily pulled back slightly, looking into Sara's eyes. “You’re stronger than you think, Sara. You survived that heartbreak. You can face this too, whatever the outcome. Just take it one step at a time.”

Sara took a deep breath, feeling a mixture of hope and trepidation. “I don’t know if I’m ready to talk to him yet. What if it doesn’t go the way I want?”

“Then you’ll know,” Emily said gently. “And you can move forward. But if it does go the way you hope, it could be something beautiful.”

Sara smiled faintly, feeling a glimmer of hope amidst her fears. “Thanks, Em. I really needed to hear that.”

As they resumed their preparations, Sara felt a mix of excitement and anxiety stirring within her. The thought of confessing to Ethan again loomed large, but for now, she was grateful for Emily’s support.
