Sara Reyes had always been "the book girl" in Bellwood. Growing up, everyone knew her as the kid with her nose constantly stuck in a book. Whether she was sitting under the big oak tree in the park, lost in a fantasy novel, or at the library devouring stacks of mysteries, it wasn't hard to guess what Sara loved most. It was no surprise to anyone when she became the town's librarian.

This morning, Sara strolled into Bella's Café, feeling the warmth of the place as she took in the familiar sights and sounds. It was her usual routine: grab her almond latte, exchange pleasantries with Bella, and head to work at the library. But ever since Ethan Parker had started working as a barista, her mornings had become a little less predictable-and a lot more fun.

Sara spotted Ethan behind the counter, his dark hair tousled like he'd just rolled out of bed (which he probably had), and immediately noticed he was juggling two cups of coffee with a precarious grip.

"Ethan, do I need to call for backup?" Sara teased, standing at the counter.

Ethan looked up, startled, almost dropping one of the cups. "Oh hey, Sara. No need for backup, I've got it-totally under control." He grinned, but just as he said that, one cup tipped, spilling coffee all over the counter. "Well...mostly under control."

Sara couldn't help but laugh. "I don't think the coffee machine agrees with you."

Ethan grabbed a towel, quickly wiping the mess with exaggerated haste. "Hey, it's not my fault this place has a haunted coffee machine. It's out to get me, I swear."

"Haunted, huh?" Sara smirked. "Well, that's a first. Maybe I can recommend a book to help you with that."

"Great idea," Ethan quipped, "Got anything like How to Survive in a Small Town Café Without Spilling Coffee on Yourself?"

Sara tapped her chin thoughtfully. "I don't think that one's in our collection, but I can suggest a few titles on basic coordination. You know, just in case."

Ethan chuckled, shaking his head. "Very funny. What would I do without your expert advice?"

"Probably get attacked by that haunted coffee machine again," Sara shot back.

Before Ethan could reply, the café's door swung open, and in walked Mrs. Harding, the town's biggest gossip and Sara's lifelong neighbor. She marched up to the counter, completely bypassing the menu board, and gave Sara a knowing smile.

"Well, well, if it isn't our little bookworm," Mrs. Harding said, eyes twinkling. "How's the library these days, Sara? Still spending all your time with those dusty books?"

Sara grinned, used to the teasing by now. "Of course, Mrs. Harding. It's the best job in town, after all."

Mrs. Harding winked. "I always knew you'd end up at the library. Even when you were a little thing, you'd be walking around with your arms full of books. And now, you're running the place!"

Sara nodded, feeling the warmth of familiarity. "I guess some things never change."

"Unlike that poor boy behind the counter," Mrs. Harding said, glancing at Ethan with a raised eyebrow. "Seems like he's still figuring things out."

Ethan, trying to keep a straight face, chimed in, "Don't worry, Mrs. Harding. By the time you finish your coffee, I'll have this place running smoother than a library."

"Oh, I don't doubt it, dear," Mrs. Harding replied with a chuckle, "but you might want to ask Sara for some tips. She's been organized since she was five."

Sara shot Ethan a teasing look. "She's not wrong. I do have a way with keeping things in order."

"Great," Ethan said, feigning seriousness. "Now all I need is for you to follow me around and make sure I don't mess up every time I pour a cup of coffee."

"Sounds like a full-time job," Sara replied, unable to hide her smile.

As Mrs. Harding received her coffee and made her way to a table, Sara and Ethan returned to their playful banter.

"So, librarian by day, coffee coach by morning? You're really expanding your skill set," Ethan teased as he prepared Sara's almond latte.

"Well, someone's got to make sure this café doesn't fall apart," Sara joked, watching as he carefully steamed the milk. "And if that person has to be me, so be it."

Ethan shot her a mock look of defeat. "You're a tough boss, Sara."

Sara grinned, accepting her latte. "You'll thank me when you stop spilling coffee."

Just then, Bella, the café owner, popped out from the kitchen, catching the last bit of their conversation. "Is Ethan giving you trouble again, Sara?" she asked, her eyes gleaming with amusement.

"Nothing I can't handle," Sara replied. "Though he might need a lesson in multitasking."

Ethan threw his hands up in mock surrender. "Okay, okay, I get it. Sara's the multitasking queen. I'm just a humble barista trying to survive."

Bella laughed, patting Ethan on the back. "You're doing fine, kid. Besides, everyone in town knows you're just trying to impress Sara."

Ethan froze, his face flushing as red as a tomato, while Sara nearly choked on her latte. "Uh, what?" Ethan stammered.

Bella winked at him. "Don't worry, I'm just messing with you." But the playful grin on her face suggested otherwise.

Sara, still laughing, decided to ease the tension. "Well, if that's the case, Ethan, you'll have to step up your game. Impressing a librarian isn't easy."

"Oh yeah?" Ethan shot back, trying to recover his composure. "What does it take to impress a librarian?"

Sara pretended to think for a moment. "Well, for starters, knowing the difference between the Dewey Decimal System and the Library of Congress classification wouldn't hurt."

Ethan's eyes widened. "Okay, you lost me there already."

Sara giggled. "Don't worry, it's just book nerd talk. I won't quiz you on it. Yet."

As Ethan let out a relieved sigh, Mrs. Harding called out from her table. "Sara, dear, if you ever need someone to keep this boy in line, just let me know. I'll whip him into shape!"

Ethan groaned, burying his face in his hands. "Great, now I've got the whole town watching me."

Sara reached over the counter, giving his arm a light, reassuring pat. "Welcome to Bellwood, Ethan. Everybody's watching-especially when there's potential gossip."

"Fantastic," Ethan muttered, though the grin on his face betrayed how much he was enjoying the banter.

As Sara left the café, coffee in hand, she couldn't stop smiling.

Author's Note:

The town might always know Sara as "the book girl," but with Ethan around, things were definitely becoming more interesting.
