This chapter sets the stage for the conflict, establishing the shock and disbelief Rohit faces when he first learns about the match-fixing allegations. It explores his initial reaction, the quick escalation of the situation, and the beginning of his emotional turmoil as the allegations start to spread.
Rohit Sharma had always been a man of few words. His bat spoke for him. Over the years, he had seen his share of ups and downs in cricket-a sport where success was celebrated one day and failures were magnified the next. He had conquered them all, carving a reputation as one of the most dependable cricketers in the Indian team. But this-this was something he had never prepared for. Something he had never imagined would come his way.
It all started like any other day. Rohit was sitting at his kitchen table, sipping on his morning coffee, with his wife, Ritika, flipping through the newspaper. The sun was bright, the air filled with the usual morning calm. Nothing seemed out of place until Ritika froze, her eyes glued to a particular section of the sports page.
"Rohit," she called, her voice unusually tense. "You need to see this."
Rohit put down his mug and took the paper from her, glancing at the article she pointed out. A tabloid headline screamed in bold letters: Rohit Sharma Under Scrutiny for Alleged Match-Fixing.
For a moment, Rohit didn't react. He simply stared at the words on the page, trying to make sense of them. A slow, incredulous smile spread across his face, and he shook his head, muttering, "Another baseless rumor."
Ritika, however, wasn't smiling. "Rohit, this doesn't look like one of those random gossip columns. They're claiming the BCCI is launching an investigation."
Rohit raised an eyebrow, still not fully concerned. "I've heard worse. By tomorrow, it'll be yesterday's news." He tossed the paper aside and tried to push the thought out of his mind. Match-fixing? Him? It was absurd, laughable even.
But as the day wore on, that laughable thought became something far more sinister.
It started with a phone call from his manager. Then a flurry of messages flooded his phone-first from journalists, then from acquaintances and well-wishers. By noon, the news had exploded on social media. What was once a hidden rumor in the back pages of a tabloid had now become national news. Channels were running debates about his integrity. Twitter was trending with hashtags like #RohitScandal and #MatchFixingTruth.
The world was turning against him, and he didn't even know why.
When the news first broke, Rohit thought it would die down quickly. But by the evening, the BCCI had issued a statement confirming that they were investigating allegations of match-fixing involving a prominent Indian player. Although no names were officially mentioned, every media outlet had connected the dots. Rohit Sharma was the name on every journalist's lips, and the rumors were spreading like wildfire.
Rohit's phone buzzed again. It was his coach from the Mumbai Indians, someone he had always trusted. "Rohit," the voice on the other end of the line said, his tone heavy. "What's going on? I've been getting calls all day. You need to clear this up."
"I don't know what's going on, coach," Rohit replied, his frustration starting to seep through. "It's all nonsense."
"I believe you, but it's not me you need to convince. The media's eating this up. They're looking for blood."
Rohit's jaw tightened. He had seen the media do this before, turn on someone without a shred of proof. But this time, it wasn't happening to someone else. It was happening to him.
He hung up the phone and rubbed his temples, trying to stave off the headache that was slowly building. How had this spiraled out of control so quickly? He had played a hundred clean matches-no controversies, no scandals. Why now?
Ritika approached him, her face filled with concern. "What do we do now?"
Rohit exhaled slowly. "We wait. The truth will come out. It always does."
But even as he said the words, he felt a gnawing doubt in the pit of his stomach. The truth might come out eventually, but how long would that take? And how much damage would be done in the meantime?
As the hours passed, the weight of the situation began to sink in. Every channel, every headline seemed to be focused on him. His name, once synonymous with integrity and success, was now being dragged through the mud. And the worst part? There was nothing he could do about it.
By the time night fell, Rohit was exhausted-not physically, but emotionally. The whirlwind of the day had taken its toll. He sat in his living room, the TV muted as yet another news anchor discussed his "involvement" in match-fixing.
Ritika sat beside him, holding his hand, but even her comforting presence couldn't shake the unease settling over him.
"I don't understand," she said softly. "How can they accuse you of this?"
"I don't know," Rohit replied, his voice low. "But if the BCCI's involved, someone's been feeding them lies. And now, I'm stuck proving something I haven't done."
As the night grew darker, so did Rohit's thoughts. He had never been one to care about what people thought of him. He had let his bat do the talking, let his performances on the field define him. But this was different. His name, his legacy, his career-everything he had worked for was now in question.
Rohit knew one thing for sure: this wasn't just going to disappear. He was in for a fight, and it wouldn't be an easy one.
Little did he know, the hardest part wasn't going to be fighting the media, the BCCI, or the allegations. The hardest part would be facing his teammates-the very people he thought would stand by him no matter what.
