The wind had picked up as Violet walked through the empty streets of New York, her mind still racing from the conversation with Sora. The city felt eerily quiet, the emptiness only adding to the unease that gnawed at her. She had always been able to sense when something was wrong—when the balance of power in the vampire world was shifting—and tonight, that feeling was stronger than ever.
As she made her way back to the Blackthorne estate, Violet found herself lost in thought. She had grown up surrounded by power, her family name carrying weight in the vampire world for centuries. The Blackthorne family was one of the oldest and most influential, and her father, Cedric, had always been a master at navigating the delicate politics that kept the families in check. But lately, things have been changing. Cedric had become more distant, more secretive, and Violet couldn't shake the feeling that he was preparing for something—something big.
The Blackthorne estate loomed ahead, its towering gates and sprawling grounds a testament to the family's wealth and power. The estate had been in the family for generations, and it was both a sanctuary and a fortress. As Violet approached the gates, they swung open silently, and she stepped inside, the familiar sense of home doing little to ease her anxiety.
She made her way through the winding pathways that led to the grand entrance of the mansion, her thoughts still focused on the war she and Sora feared was coming. The Blackthorne name had always been a symbol of strength, but Violet couldn't help but wonder if that strength would be enough to protect them from what was coming.
As she entered the mansion, the warmth of the interior contrasted sharply with the cold night air outside. The grand foyer was as immaculate as ever, the high ceilings and ornate chandeliers casting a soft glow over the marble floors. Violet paused for a moment, taking in the familiar surroundings before making her way down the long corridor toward her father's study.
She had avoided speaking to Cedric for days, unsure of how to approach him with her growing concerns. But now, after her conversation with Sora, she knew
she couldn't avoid it any longer. She needed to know what he was planning—and if he knew more about the unrest than he was letting on.
The heavy oak door to Cedric's study loomed ahead, and Violet hesitated for a moment before knocking lightly. A few seconds later, her father's deep voice called out from within.
"Enter."
Violet pushed the door open, stepping into the study. The room was as imposing as ever, with its tall bookshelves lined with ancient tomes and the massive desk that dominated the space. Behind the desk, Cedric sat, his sharp blue eyes locking onto his daughter as she entered.
"Violet," Cedric greeted her, his tone calm but with an edge of expectation. "It's been a while."
Violet offered a small nod as she approached the desk. "I've been... busy."
Cedric's gaze remained fixed on her, his expression unreadable. "I see. And what has kept you so occupied?"
Violet hesitated for a moment, unsure of how much to reveal. "I've been hearing things, Father. Rumors. Whispers of unrest among the families."
Cedric leaned back in his chair, his hands steepled in front of him. "Rumors are nothing new, Violet. The families have always been on the edge of conflict."
Violet shook her head, her voice tinged with frustration. "This is different. The balance is shifting, and no one seems to know who's behind it. Sora and I have been trying to piece things together, but it feels like we're missing something—something important."
Cedric's eyes narrowed slightly, though his expression remained calm. "And what makes you think this unrest is different from the usual power struggles?"
Violet met her father's gaze, her voice steady. "Because everyone is afraid, but no one knows why. It's like something is coming, and we're all just waiting for the first strike."
For a moment, there was silence as Cedric studied her, his eyes searching her face for any sign of weakness. Finally, he leaned forward, his voice low and measured.
"Fear is a powerful tool, Violet. It can be used to control, to manipulate, to push others into making mistakes. But it can also be dangerous if left unchecked."
Violet frowned, her frustration growing. "So you do know something. You're just not telling me."
Cedric's gaze hardened. "I know that the vampire world is always on the edge of chaos. And I know that those who survive are the ones who understand how to play the game."
Violet felt a surge of anger. "This isn't a game, Father. This is our world. Our lives."
Cedric's expression didn't change. "It is a game, Violet. One that has been played for centuries. And if you want to survive, you need to learn how to play it."
Violet clenched her fists, trying to keep her emotions in check. "So what's your next move? What are you planning?"
Cedric's eyes flashed with something—annoyance, or perhaps amusement. "My next move is to ensure the survival of this family. That is all you need to know."
Violet felt a chill run down her spine. There was something in her father's voice, something cold and calculating, that unsettled her. She had always known Cedric was a master manipulator, but now, standing in front of him, she realized just how far he was willing to go to protect the Blackthorne name.
"Is that why you've been pulling away from me?" Violet asked quietly. "Because you don't trust me?"
Cedric's expression softened slightly, though his voice remained firm. "Trust is earned, Violet. And in times like these, it is a luxury we cannot afford. You are my daughter, and I have trained you to be strong. But strength is not enough. You need to be smart, to know when to act and when to wait."
Violet nodded, though her mind was still reeling from the conversation. She had hoped to gain some insight into her father's plans, but instead, she had only
confirmed her worst fears: Cedric was preparing for something, and whatever it was, he wasn't going to share it with her until it was too late.
As she turned to leave the study, Cedric's voice called out after her. "Remember, Violet. In this world, the only thing that matters is power. Those who have it survive. Those who don't... perish."
Violet left the study, her mind swirling with thoughts. The vampire world was shifting, and her father was playing a dangerous game. But for the first time, Violet realized that she wasn't just a piece on the board—she had the power to make her own moves.
And she would.
