The New York docks were quiet, shrouded in the early hours of the morning mist. The air was thick with the smell of saltwater and rusting metal, the sounds of distant waves crashing against the docked ships barely audible over the hum of the city in the distance. To anyone passing by, it was just another bland, forgotten warehouse sitting on the edge of the docks, blending into the industrial landscape. Unremarkable, uninteresting—exactly the way the Cleaners wanted it.

Violet walked toward the building, her boots echoing softly against the concrete. The exterior of the warehouse was nondescript—gray, weathered walls, and an unmarked metal door that could have belonged to any storage facility in the city. The structure seemed invisible, forgotten, as if it didn't belong in this world. Violet smirked to herself. In many ways, it didn't.

She glanced over her shoulder before pushing the door open and slipping inside.

The interior was starkly different from the dull outside. Inside, the space was bustling with quiet activity, its walls lined with high-tech computers and large, illuminated maps that displayed key cities around the world. The five home cities of the most powerful vampire families were pinpointed in red: New York for the Blackthorne family, Paris for the Monclair family, St. Petersburg for the Molchalin family, Romania for the Eldredge family, and Osaka for the Yamamoto family.

In the center of the room stood a large table, where the four other members of the Cleaners had already gathered, their faces set in various degrees of focus and concern. Violet moved toward them, her eyes briefly scanning the maps and screens before settling on the group around the table.

Sora Yamamoto, the right hand to Lady Aiko Yamamoto, sat with a calm but sharp intensity, her dark eyes following the data that scrolled across the screen in front of her. Next to her was Sergei Molchalin, the right hand of Ivan Molchalin from the St. Petersburg family. Sergei's broad frame and steely gaze reflected his military background, his hands folded tightly as if ready for action at any moment.

Hugo Monclair, the right hand of Alistair Monclair of Paris, leaned back in his chair, his demeanor deceptively relaxed as he twirled a pen between his fingers. His cool, detached expression didn't quite hide the sharp intellect behind his pale eyes. Finally, Lucian Eldredge, the right hand of Saraphina Eldredge from Romania, sat with a quiet intensity, his long fingers tracing the edges of a piece of parchment, his dark hair casting shadows across his angular face.

"Violet," Sora greeted her as she entered, her voice calm but serious. "You're the last to arrive."

Violet gave her a slight nod and took her place at the table. "Got here as fast as I could. What's going on?"

Sergei was the first to speak, his deep, accented voice filling the room. "We have a problem," he said bluntly, his eyes flicking toward the map of New York. "There have been reports of mysterious deaths—unexplained, violent, and happening too frequently to be a coincidence."

Hugo leaned forward, his relaxed posture giving way to a more serious expression. "How many deaths are we talking about?" he asked.

Sergei clicked a few keys on the nearby console, and a series of reports flashed across the screen. "Six in the last two weeks. All within the same few blocks in Manhattan. The deaths were all unusual—bodies found drained of blood, but without any obvious wounds."

Violet's eyes narrowed as she studied the data. "Humans?"

"Yes," Sergei confirmed. "And the humans are noticing. These kinds of deaths are impossible to hide for long, especially in the middle of New York. If the authorities start investigating deeper, they'll come too close to finding us."

Lucian's voice was soft but carried a weight of urgency. "The last thing we need is the human world getting too curious. If they begin connecting these deaths to the vampire world, it will put us all at risk."

Sora leaned back in her chair, her expression thoughtful. "This pattern isn't random. Someone is orchestrating these deaths, either intentionally or recklessly. It feels like someone is trying to draw attention to us."

Violet's mind raced as she considered the implications. The vampire world had survived for centuries by staying hidden, by making sure humans never knew the truth about what lurked in the shadows. But these deaths—so public, so brutal—threatened to undo everything.

"So who do we think is behind this?" Violet asked, her eyes scanning the faces around the table. "Is it one of the families?"

Sergei shook his head. "We've investigated the local vampire circles. None of the known groups are responsible, or so they claim."

"It's too messy for any of the families," Hugo added. "If someone were trying to make a power move, they wouldn't be so careless. This is drawing too much attention."

Violet frowned, her instincts telling her there was something they were missing. "Then it's someone who doesn't care about exposure. Someone who either wants to create chaos or has nothing to lose."

Lucian spoke again, his voice thoughtful. "We need to be cautious. If this is a trap, rushing in blindly could make things worse. But if we don't act, more humans will die, and we'll be in an even bigger mess."

Sora nodded in agreement. "We'll need to conduct our own investigation. Quietly. We can't afford to tip off whoever is behind this, and we definitely can't let the authorities get involved."

Violet glanced at the maps again, her mind piecing together the puzzle. "I'll start with the area where the deaths have occurred. Maybe we can find something the humans missed."

Sergei folded his arms across his chest. "I'll go with you. We'll need to keep a low profile, but we can't take any chances. Whoever is behind this may be watching."

Lucian leaned forward, his eyes focused. "Hugo and I will gather intel from the local circles. We'll see if there are any rumors of new players in town or someone operating in the shadows."

Sora stood, her expression determined. "I'll coordinate with my contacts in Japan. We need to make sure this isn't part of a larger, international issue. If it's happening here, it could be happening elsewhere."

Violet nodded, feeling a sense of urgency rising within her. Whoever was behind these deaths was reckless and dangerous, and the Cleaners would have to act fast if they wanted to prevent further exposure. This wasn't just about protecting the vampire world—it was about survival.

As they prepared to leave the warehouse, Sergei gave one last warning. "We're playing a dangerous game now. One wrong move, and the humans will see the truth. If that happens, none of us are safe."

Violet met his gaze, her determination matching his. "Then we won't make any wrong moves."

The Cleaners dispersed, each heading in a different direction, but the weight of their mission was clear. The world was changing, and the shadows they had once thrived in were growing thinner. As Violet stepped out of the warehouse and into the cool night air, she couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.

Something bigger was coming
