Six months has gone by, on August 12th, Hayes, Noah, Sophie, Jordan and Jake decide to explore beyond the Tier 4 area where they have been confined. Hayes has declined his father's offer to move up to the exclusive Tier 1, choosing instead to remain with his friends, especially Noah.
With help from V, who is sanctioned in Tier 3, the group makes their way past the guarded checkpoints into the less restricted Tier 3 territories. As they walk through the utilitarian metal corridors, they discuss their suspicions about what the leadership could be hiding in Tier 1.
"There's definitely something sketchy going on up there," Sophie says. "Why all the secrecy and restrictions?"
"My dad keeps dropping hints about some special project they're working on," Hayes reveals. "But he won't give me any real details."
"We need to find out what they're up to," Jordan declares. "The inequality between tiers isn't right. People have a right to know."
Noah nods in agreement. "Our plan is to make it to Tier 1 by tomorrow. Hopefully we can get some answers."
V leads them to a small dormitory room where they can rest for the night. He promises to return early and guide them further into Tier 2 in the morning. After V leaves, Hayes activates a scanning device to check for surveillance.
"We're clear," he confirms. "But we'll have to be extra cautious from here on out."
The group settles in for the night, reflecting on how much their lives have changed since the catastrophe that forced them into the bunker. Noah lies awake long after the others have fallen asleep, listening to Hayes' steady breathing beside him. Fatigue eventually overtakes him.
Noah is jolted awake by a blaring alarm. Red emergency lights flash as a loudspeaker announces a security breach. Hayes jumps up in alarm.
"They must be onto us," he says. "We've got to move, now!"
They scramble to collect their belongings and make their way into the corridor where panicked people rush by. V appears and ushers them into a service elevator.
"This will take us down to Tier 2," he explains. "But we need to hurry before they seal it off."
The elevator descends rapidly, opening to reveal a dim industrial area. They sneak down deserted passages until coming to a heavy steel door marked "Authorized Personnel Only." Hayes pulls out a decryption device and gets to work overriding the digital lock while the others stand guard.
After tense minutes, the door slides open. They slip inside what appears to be a control room filled with monitors and computer terminals monitoring the bunker's systems. One screen shows security forces mobilizing through Tier 3.
"We need to sabotage the surveillance system in our microchips so they can't track us," V says, rapidly typing commands into a console. The screens soon go dark. "We need to go find this tech guy in Tier 2, he should be able to disable the tracker."
They exit through another door into a warehouse filled with crates and machinery. Moving stealthily between stacks and equipment, they make their way toward a gateway labeled Tier 2 Access. Hayes disables the security panel, allowing them to pass through undetected.
Beyond the gate, they enter a residential area with simple apartments and a few shops and cafes. People mill about on errands, oblivious to the intruders. V leads the group to a nondescript building and punches a code into the access panel, revealing a hidden room.
"He was my partner during my days in the army," he says. "We can't go any further for now."
The door opens to a space lit with red LED lights, revealing a man with piercing eyes and a close-cropped beard. His intense gaze takes in the group, lingering on V, before gesturing them inside. The room is sparse, with boxes of equipment and a single terminal glowing on a desk.
