Chapter 2 Date: 6/04/2027
Five days had passed since Sophia and Tobias had settled into the new shelter. The group had grown quiet, their first excitement and relief giving way to a sense of routine and monotony. Sophia had finally begun to feel like she was finding some semblance of normalcy, but her unease about Ava and her friends lingered.
Tobias, too, had noticed the pattern. Whenever new people entered the shelter, they seemed to disappear within a week. At first, he had chalked it up to people just moving on to find better opportunities or getting injured in the wild. But as the frequency of these disappearances continued, he could not shake off the feeling that something was off.
As they sat around the fire that evening, Ava, and her friends were enjoying themselves, laughing and chatting like they always did. But Tobias's gaze kept drifting back to them, his eyes narrowing as he studied their behavior.
Sophia caught his glance and followed his gaze, her eyes locking onto Ava's group with a mixture of unease and suspicion. She had been right all along, Tobias thought. Something was wrong.
He leaned in closer to Sophia, his voice barely above a whisper. "Hey, kiddo, I need to talk to you about something."
Sophia turned to him, her eyes wide with concern. "What is it?"
Tobias hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "I've noticed something weird. Whenever new people come in here... they seem to disappear within a week."
Sophia's eyes widened further as she understood where he was going. "You mean Ava and her friends?" Tobias nodded grimly. "Yeah. And it is not just a coincidence. I think they're behind it." Sophia's grip on her cup tightened, her knuckles white with tension. "I knew it," she whispered. "I knew they were hiding something." Tobias's eyes locked onto hers, his expression serious. "We need to be careful, Sophia. We can't trust them anymore."
The two of them sat there for a moment, the fire crackling and spitting in the silence between them. Ava and her friends were oblivious to the conversation, lost in their own little world of laughter and chatter.
But Sophia and Tobias knew the truth. They knew that they were sitting in a powder keg of danger, waiting for the spark that would set everything off. And they knew that they were next on the list.
Sophia's eyes were wide with concern, her mind racing with the implications of Tobias's words. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she gazed at Ava and her friends, their laughter and chatter now taking on a sinister tone.
Tobias's serious expression sensed her unease, and he reached out to gently take her hand. "Hey, kiddo, it's okay," he said softly. "We'll figure something out. We're safe here, with each other."
Sophia nodded, feeling a small sense of comfort at his words. She looked up at him, her eyes locking onto his warm and reassuring gaze. Without thinking, she leaned in close, wrapping her arms around his waist and cuddling up against him.
Tobias's eyes softened as he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer. "It's okay, kiddo," he repeated, his voice low and soothing. "I've got you. We'll face whatever comes our way together."
As they sat there by the campfire, the warmth of the flames and the comfort of Tobias's presence seemed to chase away some of Sophia's fears. She snuggled deeper into his chest, feeling a sense of safety and security wash over her.
Just then, Tobias pulled out a cup from his backpack and was making something and then handed it to Sophia. "Here, kiddo," he said with a smile. "I made you some hot chocolate."
