Emma stirred in her sleep,
a strange, vivid dream lingering on the edges of
her consciousness as she slowly woke.
She felt a warmth in her chest, spreading outward,
a sensation so foreign it startled her fully awake.
For a moment, she just laid there,
blinking up at the ceiling,
her mind swirling in confusion. She felt... different.
As if something had shifted inside her,
some new awareness humming just beneath her skin. She sat up slowly,
pushing her hair back from her face,
and glanced at the clock. It was nearly noon.
The room was filled with soft daylight,
the sun casting gentle beams across the hardwood floor.
The events of the previous day
—the fall, the fear, the exhaustion—
flashed through her mind,
but they seemed oddly distant now,
almost like a memory from another lifetime.Emma swung her legs over the side of the bed, hesitating.
There was a fluttering sensation in her stomach,
a kind of nervous anticipation she couldn't quite place. It was as if something was pulling her,
drawing her toward something unknown.
Shaking off the strange feeling,
she got up and quickly dressed, choosing a loose, comfortable outfit that didn't require much thought: an long-sleeved henley and jeans. She glanced at herself in the mirror, frowning slightly. She looked the same as always,
but she didn't feel the same.
She brushed her teeth and styled her bangs before heading downstairs, the house was quiet,
the usual bustle of family activity absent.
Emma made her way to the kitchen,
where she found her mom sitting at the table,
nursing a cup of coffee and reading the paper."Morning, honey," her mom said,
looking up with a warm smile.
"You slept in today. How are you feeling?""Good, I think." Emma hesitated,
trying to find the right words for the strange sensation lingering in her chest.
"I feel... different, though. It's hard to explain."Her mom's smile faded a bit, her brow furrowing. "Different how?"
"I don't know," Emma said, shaking her head.
"It's like, I woke up feeling connected to something.
Or someone. I just... I feel weirdly close to everyone."Her mom tilted her head,
concern flickering in her eyes.
"Maybe it's just the stress from yesterday.
You had a pretty intense experience.
Maybe your body and mind are still recovering.""Yeah, maybe," Emma said,
but she knew it was more than that.
There was something deeper at play,
something she couldn't quite grasp.Just then, there was a soft knock at the kitchen door. Emma's heart skipped,
and she felt an odd jolt of excitement.
Without really thinking about it,
she crossed the room and opened the door
to find Mila standing there in a purple robe,
her dark hair pulled into a messy bun,
her eyes wide and a little wild."Hey," Mila said breathlessly.
"I—do you have a minute?"Emma nodded, stepping aside to let her in.
"Of course. What's up?"Mila bit her lip,
glancing around as if to make sure no one else was around.
"I know this is going to sound crazy, but I feel weird.. Like, REALLY weird."Emma's heart pounded harder. "Weird how?"
Mila stepped closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I woke up and I just—I felt different,
like I could sense people.
And not just like I was aware of them,
but like I could FEEL them.
What they are feeling, almost."Emma's eyes widened.
"That's exactly how I felt!
Like I woke up and there was this... connection. Everything feels almost heightened,
I thought I was losing it."
