Niall’s POV
“How was your first day as a hillbilly?” David joked the second I got in the truck. I was too tired to fight back so I just rolled my eyes in response. “Oh come on man, I’m serious, did everything go good?”
I kicked the dirt off of my work boots and onto the floor of the car. I had gotten a sunburn everywhere except the little area of skin that my tank top covered. I was sweating like crazy and I had at least five or six splinters in my hand from fixing the fence.
“It was okay. Not as hard as I was expecting but not necessarily easy either.”
“You the only one there today?”
“No, Billy was there too,” I paused, debating whether or not to even mention Lila. He stayed silent so I thought I might as well just tell him.
“Do you know Lila? The farmer’s daughter?”
“Niall, every guy around here knows Lila. Why? Did you meet her?” he asked, nudging me teasingly in the arm with his elbow.
“Yeah, she’s cute. Is she single…or?”
David hesitated before answering, and I didn’t know what to think.
“Um, well she’s single, but...” he stopped mid-sentence, trying to gather the right words before speaking.
“But what?” I asked curiously.
“She’s not exactly available…” he finished, not quite easing my confusion.
“If she’s single, then how is she not available?”
“Ni, she’s only allowed to date guys that her father approves. And let me tell you, that is not a very high number. I would know.” He stated knowingly.
“You tried dating Lila?”
“You could say that. Pretty much every guy has tried at least once.”
“Well what happened?”
He laughed, pondering over the memory before speaking of it.
“Well, I was about 15 maybe 16, it was the first day of summer and Lila and a couple buddies of mine were out at the lake ya know, just hanging out.” He paused, now full on laughing. I shot him a confused glance as I titled my head, waiting for him to continue. “There was alcohol; I mean obviously it was a bunch of teenagers on the first day of summer vacation. Lila and I were the only ones who weren’t drinking, but that didn’t stop her dad from beating my ass when he showed up out of the blue. Ya see, what I should have started out with was the fact that I had asked him for permission to take her out that night and he said yes. So I was responsible for her for the night. And although I was watching out for her, all old man Davidson saw was a little punk who was trying to get his little girl drunk and vulnerable.”
I thought about the story, trying to figure out whether or not this was his warning for me to stay away from her.
“You know, she has no idea who One Direction is.” I informed him, still kind of shocked myself. I’m not trying to sound conceited, but come on we are the biggest boyband at the moment, how could she not have at least heard of us before?
“Niall to be honest if you weren’t my cousin I wouldn’t have a clue who One Direction is either. It’s honestly just Country music down here. It’s kind of ‘frowned upon’ to listen to anything else. Don’t take it personally.”
“She said the same thing. I can’t tell if she was flirting or not…I can usually tell right off the bat, but she’s hard to read.” I admitted, replaying Lila and I’s conversation in my head.
“Oh she was flirting, trust me on that.”
“How do you know?”
“She loves singers, so regardless of her not knowing your band, she now knows you can sing.”
“Should I go for it?” I asked curiously.
“I don’t know about that man…you could be getting yourself into a sticky situation.”
“If I was to go for it anyways would you be willing to help me?” I asked eagerly, hoping he’d cave and agree.
He sighed, from what I assumed was annoyance but prayed it was more of a ‘fine I’ll help you’ sigh. He turned left; pulling into his driveway and he turned off the car.
“Fine. But if you end up getting your ass kicked by her father I am not helping you out. I warned you.”
I smiled cockily, basking in my victory. He rolled his eyes at my smug attitude before cracking a smile himself.
“So how do I go about this?” I asked, wondering where to start. “How do I get her attention?”
“Hm,” he said, pausing to think. “Well, there is a county fair tomorrow night; everyone in town goes every year. It’s sort of a party to kick off the summer. There’s rides and food and games, and…singing.” he emphasized the word ‘singing’ and I quickly knew where this was headed.
“You want me to sing?”
“Yes,”
“My bands’ songs?”
“No,” he said abruptly. “Well, maybe…but you’ll have to get the crowd to like you first. Which means you’ll have to sing a bit of country first.”
I froze at his words, all of a sudden rethinking this whole ordeal.
“I don’t know any country songs…”
“I can show you some.”
“How many exactly do you think I’ll be singing?”
“That’s more for the crowd to decide, but if you’re good enough to be in a band, I’m sure everyone will love you.”
We both got out of the car and headed for the house, where I would start my country boy training. What have I gotten myself into?
