Emma was staying at a hotel when there was a knock at the door.

She opened it, but quickly tried to slam it shut.

Standing outside was none other than her current husband.

"Don't even think about pretending to be dead. Where's the money? What happened to all the money Tom gave you?"

Emma had once held him in her arms, her face full of concern, saying he had depression and could die at any moment.

Looking at him now, he didn't look depressed at all—more like he had bipolar disorder.

"You said she had money, and now look at us, faking a divorce for nothing."

Jack's ex-wife shot him a sharp look, and Jack immediately apologized, his voice trembling.

"Honey, I looked into it. Tom was really good at making money. Over the years, he gave it all to this idiot, and now that he's dead, the money must be in her hands."

His wife smacked Emma's cheek lightly.

"You're really ungrateful."

She turned back to Jack, who was groveling beside her.

"Who knew you had such charm? You even got someone to divorce you."

Jack's ex-wife came from a wealthy family. Back then, people said Emma's father didn't approve of their marriage, but in truth, it was Jack who didn't want to commit.

Jack gave a sheepish grin but quickly turned back to Emma with a menacing glare.

He shoved her to the ground, barging into the room, tearing the place apart in search of money. But after searching everywhere, he found nothing.

"Where did you get the money to stay at this hotel?"

Emma didn't reply. She clung desperately to a box, holding it tight.

Looking closely, I realized—it was my urn. How did it end up in her hands?

Jack snatched the urn from her, but Emma lunged forward, sinking her teeth into his wrist. He yelped in pain.

His wife responded by slapping Emma across the face, leaving a clear handprint. Blood trickled from the corner of Emma's mouth.

Jack opened the urn and cursed.

"Disgusting!"

He dumped the ashes onto the floor, kicked Emma in the stomach, and then stormed out.

Emma sobbed and screamed, frantically trying to gather my ashes, her hands shaking as she scooped them off the floor.

I turned away. I couldn't bear to watch any longer.

Even after all that, Jack still posted Emma's photos online, selling them for money and sharing them with everyone they knew.

No matter where she went, people whispered behind her back.

Even though I had loved her for so long and had every reason to hate her now, part of me still felt a twinge of pity.

But it didn't matter. I was dead. There was nothing I could do.

I thought Jack would give up, but to my shock, he went to find my mother.

I only found out when Emma rushed over to stop him.

This time, she was smart enough to call the police.

When the police took Jack away, he spat out threats as he was handcuffed.

I thought that would be the end of it, but Jack was released not long after.

He knew he wasn't getting any money, but he couldn't resist the chance to humiliate Emma.

"Remember when you fell into the lake in college? It wasn't me who saved you. It was that fool Tom. And you were so stupid, believing whatever people told you."

"Do you know why he got cancer? It was because of you. You're the one who fed him the carcinogens."

Jack's words poured out like venom, and he watched Emma's face crumble with a twisted sense of satisfaction. He laughed, his eyes gleaming with cruelty.

If I had known she loved the person who had jumped into the freezing lake to save her, I would have fought harder to clear up the misunderstanding. But life doesn't give you second chances.

What shocked me the most was how long they had been seeing each other behind my back.

Emma covered her ears, refusing to listen to the truth.

The moment of realization came too late.

Emma spent the entire night in agony after learning what had really happened, but by the next morning, she was back to her old self, polished and poised, as if nothing had happened.

She was the first to arrive at the school to pick up Lily, even earlier than my mom.

She greeted my mom, and though my mom ignored her, Emma didn't seem to mind.

When Lily finally came out, Emma walked over, crouching down in front of her just like I used to.

"Your mom is so pretty!" one of the children said, looking at Emma with wide-eyed admiration.

Lily blushed, shy but proud.

Seeing mother and daughter together like that, my mom didn't interfere.

Kids are innocent, quick to forget and forgive.

I thought Emma's sudden change was because she wanted to regain custody of Lily.

But to my surprise, after kissing Lily gently on the cheek, she handed her back to my mom.

I followed Emma as she walked alone to an abandoned factory.
