Stone~
It was past one in the fucking morning, and still pissed as fuck, I was now standing around with Ross and Fox, waiting on Saxton for some goddamn clandestine meeting. So, by the time that Saxton's white Lexus LS 500 finally made its way into the wooded clearing on the edge of the city limits of Serenity Springs, I was ready to snap.
It's been a long fucking night.
When Saxton made his way towards the group, it seemed like I wasn't the only one irritated. "What the hell, Voss?" Fox kicked off. "It's past one in the fucking morning."
"Seriously," Ross added. "I was ready to pass the fuck out and call it a day."
Saxton just took it all in stride. "I just came from Kincaid's and-"
"What in the hell were you doing at Kincaid's at this hour?" Fox asked, and there was a lot to unpack in the tone of his voice. What in the hell did Fox Harrington care if Saxton Voss was at Kincaid's? After all, he was her sponsor.
However, before I could question it any further, Saxton's grey eyes shot my way. "Rylee was over at her place," he announced, and I could feel the coldness icing through my veins.
All three of them were looking my way as I asked, "And?"
"Before I say anything, are we all in agreement about August Remington?" Saxton asked, and a foreboding tingle danced down my spine. "I mean, you guys already know how I feel about him."
"I haven't downplayed what I think of him," Ross answered. "I don't trust him."
"Yeah, I don't much care for him myself," Fox added. "The guy's just too...slippery. He reminds me of a used-car salesman."
"Yeah," Ross agreed. "Can look you right in the eye, knowing everything coming out of his mouth is bullshit."
"Stone?"
"I went after him during our initiation, didn't I?" I reminded him. "I think that speaks for itself."
Saxton gave us all a collaborating nod before speaking, and I had to give the guy points for what he did next. "While I called you guys here for Order business, this also involves your personal business, Stone," he said. "Do you want to do this in private first?"
Saxton didn't owe me that. If this had anything to do with The Order, then he was in his right to say whatever he had to say out in the open. We were bound to each other and The Order more than we were bound to our supporters unless I had gone ahead and married Rylee. A wife was at the top of the food chain in the organization.
"Nah," I threw out casually, though I was feeling anything but. "It's fine."
"Rylee stopped by Kincaid's to ask her if she or her family were going to suffer any repercussions from the cancelled Hera contract," he began, and surprise was Ross' and Fox's first reactions.
"What the fuck?" Ross exclaimed.
"Cancelled?" Fox asked, confused.
"Stone broke off the engagement and cancelled the contract," Saxton informed them.
Both guys looked at me, and I just shrugged. "The girl's a slut. I got out just in time."
Saxton shook his head a bit. "But she's not, Stone."
My eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
I stood there, emotions whirling around uncontrollably in the pit of my stomach, as Saxton Voss recounted everything that Rylee had told him and Kincaid from the moment that she had arrived at Kincaid's front door to when he'd walked out, then had texted us all, demanding an emergency meeting. When he was done with his story and theories about August and Laney, I felt like I'd never be able to get enough air in my lungs to function properly ever again.
