No one really warns you about how much your life can change during Spring Break. Matty thought that people severely downplayed college Spring Break. There was no part of her that expected to see her estranged twin sister to get tipsy or call her married ex-boyfriend. There was no part of her that expected to see her ex-not-really-but-basically-boyfriend... There was definitely no part of her that thought she would find herself kissing Logan Huntzberger on the beach in Florida.
Yeah... Spring Break was definitely downplayed.
The Monday back at Yale began like any other for Matilda Hayden. She got up, went for a jog to clear her head, went to the dance studio, showered, then went to breakfast with Briar and Charlotte.
"Who keeps calling you?" Charlotte asked as Matty pressed decline on her phone for what felt like twentieth time in two days.
"Oh it's just my dad," Matty lied smoothly. "He keeps calling me to update me about Gigi." She laughed lightly as she pushed around her eggs. "You would think he had never raised a kid before."
"I still think it's crazy that Sherry went into labor early," said Briar, shaking her head.
"Lucky you, huh? You got out of having to be there at the birth since it all happened so fast and you were hours away," Charlotte chimed in.
"Yeah," muttered Matty. "Lucky me."
If Matty was completely honest, she'd barely thought about the fact she now had a little sister. It wasn't that she wasn't excited; it was cool. New life was exciting, right?
But it was still an adjustment. Her whole life it was just her and her dad. Then, Sherry was added to the mix. That was an adjustment. Then, she was reunited with her mother and twin sister. That was an adjustment. Now, she had a little sister, one she hadn't even met yet. That was definitely an adjustment.
"I feel like a need a whole other break just to recover from Spring Break," sighed Matty.
"I am right there with you," Charlotte agreed. "I feel like I am battling the never-ending hangover. And Doyle is already on us about our writing assignments."
"I felt like Spring Break was very relaxing," Briar said; her voice carrying a chipper tone. Matty and Charlotte both raised an eyebrow at her.
"Well, of course you did," teased Charlotte. "You and Jamie couldn't get enough of each other! It was sickeningly sweet."
Matty had never seen Briar so infatuated with anyone before. But there was a glint in her eye when Jamie come up in conversation. She could see the blush that flushed her face every time his name popped up on her phone.
