I wasn't really surprised, but the Frank family allowed David to take the Model T off the property and restore it. Benjamin Frank said it belonged to his father, and he would like to see it looking like new. He would come and visit once it was complete. I stood there in David's driveway as the old, decaying car was sitting there, covered in dust and some leaves, and people passing by looked over at it.
"Okay, it's an eyesore," David said. "I guessed it seemed to fit being on the abandoned property, but sitting in my clean driveway while everything around it is new..."
"I get it. It's going to be a labor of love for sure. You and Annie have enough to fix this thing up, right?"
"I have a lot of the tools needed, and I have some paint I can use. Dad said that there are some spare car parts lying around in the garage at home, but... this will need a whole new engine and leather upholstery. Labor of love is right, but I'm going to do it for the Franks, mainly Benjamin's father."
I nodded as we still looked over this old thing that was falling apart. "That's a great reason. I'll help in any way that I can. I've fixed up a couple cars but not completely restoring them, essentially."
"I'm going to need all the help I can get. Thanks."
"You're welcome, man."
We got to it. We started by taking off the hood to reveal the ancient engine. It was old and rusted, and there were spider webs all over it. Well, the whole car had webs. David grimaced. "Yikes."
"You got that right, buddy. But we can do it. I think it's an honor to work on such a relic. The old girl just needs a lot of TLC."
"TLC?"
"Tender love and care."
"I see. I agree. Well, she'll need a new engine, so let's get this out. You afraid of spiders?"
"You forget that I explore abandoned places that are filled with them, along with bats."
He shuddered at that. "Point taken. Okay..."
Annie came out of the house as we had a fairly easy time getting this old engine out of this turn-of-the-century car. Turn of last century since I came from the second Roaring Twenties.
"I really can't believe that you boys are doing this," Annie said, folding her arms. She was pretty lady with brown hair, and she was younger than both of us. "It seems that it's beyond repair."
"It's going to happen, love," said David. "A little confidence would be nice."
"Oh, I have a lot of confidence in you, just not in this car. It's completely falling apart. It's going to take a fortune to make it at least running again, and we don't have much. I say you pause on this until you get a job that can pay for what you need to do."
David huffed as he stood there, and I stepped away out of this little discussion between a husband and wife. David said, "That's a really good idea, but... I have enough supplies that I can get started on this. I'm still looking for a job. I promise I won't spend a lot, okay? Not until I get a job."
