Creepypasta and EXE/GLITCH Characters: Myths, Horror, and Virtual Nightmares

Creepypasta is a form of digital horror that was born on internet forums and blogs where people started sharing spooky stories, legends and myths. These stories are often very disturbing, filled with horror and supernatural elements, often focusing on modern technology, video games, software and the Internet. One of the scariest categories of creepypast are stories about EXE and GLITCH characters - characters that cross the boundaries of the virtual world and enter the reality of their victims.

EXE characters

EXE characters are usually heroes or anti-heroes of well-known video games who have undergone some sort of dark transformation. They probably came about as fans became interested in the idea of "corrupted" versions of games where something is wrong. The most famous of these stories is undoubtedly Sonic.exe. This story follows a player who receives a mysterious, disturbing copy of Sonic the Hedgehog. When he starts the game, he discovers that Sonic is no ordinary hero, but a terrifying, bloodthirsty creature with bloodshot eyes that appears to be able to interact with the player's reality. Sonic.exe gradually terrorizes the player until it finally plunges them into absolute terror and despair.

Similar EXE characters often share common elements: deformed characters, disturbing music or sounds, strange behavior, and the threat that what's inside the game can affect the real world. EXE files are normally executable programs in the real world (hence the .exe extension), but in creepypastas they represent a sort of portal to a world where video game characters turn into nightmares.
